Giggs 'still undecided' on United future

$

Ryan Giggs says he is still to decide about his Manchester United future despite making what appeared to be a farewell appearance in a 3-1 win over Hull City.
Giggs, the club's current interim manager, sent himself on as a 70th-minute substitute in Tuesday's Premier League game at Old Trafford, which was United's last home fixture of the campaign.
The 40-year-old midfielder's contract is due to expire at the end of the season, but he made no mention of his future in a post-match address to the crowd.
Speaking to journalists afterwards, he explained that he had not reached a decision about whether to hang up his boots after a 23-year United career in which he has made a record 963 appearances for the club.
"I've not decided yet," he said. "Nothing has changed. I'll wait until the season has finished and then get a holiday and think about it in the next couple of weeks."
On Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, whose contracts are also due to expire but who did not feature against Hull, Giggs added: "It is not as if they are young players and they are up in the air.
"If they carry on, they carry on; if they leave, they leave. New players are going to come in anyway, whether they stay or go.
"It is up in the air, but in the next couple of weeks, I think it will get sorted for the three of us."
Giggs was also cautious when asked to provide an update on the club's search for a permanent successor to David Moyes, who was sacked last month after only 10 months as manager.
Current Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal is widely expected to be appointed shortly, but Giggs said that vice-chairman Ed Woodward had given him no indication that an announcement was imminent.
"I have not spoken to Ed for the last couple of days, so nothing has changed since Saturday," he said.
"It could be the next few days, it could be the next couple of weeks."

'One of the greats'

Giggs sprang a surprise with his team selection by handing debuts to 18-year-old James Wilson and 20-year-old Tom Lawrence, and he was rewarded as Wilson scored twice to put United 2-0 up.
Matty Fryatt reduced the arrears for FA Cup finalists Hull, before substitute Robin van Persie made it 3-1 from Giggs's pass in the closing stages.
"We got the young lads in to train with us and they never looked out of place," Giggs said.
"I wanted to freshen things up from Saturday (a 1-0 loss to Sunderland) and they never let us down. James Wilson is not just a finisher; his all-round play is very good and he is exciting."
Giggs also heralded Inter Milan-bound club captain Nemanja Vidic, who made his final appearance as a 22nd-minute substitute for the injured Phil Jones.
"Nemanja Vidic has been a brilliant player for us, a brilliant defender," the Welshman said.
"He shared so much success with the lads. He goes with our good wishes and hopefully he does well."
On Jones, who left the fray after hurting his shoulder in an aerial clash with Maynor Figueroa, Giggs said: "He's gone to the hospital. We'll see how it looks, but it didn't look great."

Auntie Nangy

My parents don’t know Dear Auntie Nangy, I have a problem. I am in love with my boyfriend and we have been together for three years and ten months now. My parents don’t know we’re dating, what should I do auntie? You don’t say why you didn’t want to tell your parents about the relationship from the very beginning, for instance that you were too young or they wouldn’t approve of your boyfriend for whatever reason. Auntie, however, thinks that after almost four years together you should be able to tell them. Honesty is always the best policy. He dumped me Dear Auntie Nangy, I am 29 and I have a guy who has been pursuing me for three months. He then dumped me via an SMS, saying he doesn’t love me. My heart is in pieces, nothing will heal it. How does your heart break into pieces if you are dumped by a guy you weren’t even seeing? Maybe you were getting comfortable with the attention you were getting from him but that’s about it. Forget about him and move on. It might not be easy but you will have to. He loves her Dear Auntie Nangy, I am a 21-year-old lady and I am in love with a boy who loves my cousin very much. I don’t know how to handle the situation Auntie, I need your advice! The question you really need to find the answer to is whether your cousin is in love with this guy. If she feels the same as he does, then you will have to keep your feelings to yourself. You should not expect him to cheat on your cousin, because you would not want that to happen to you should the situation be reversed. But if she does not feel the same way as he does, then that changes the situation and you can work on getting him interested in you. Be subtle. Just be there for him, offer him a shoulder to cry on when things don’t work out with your cousin and listen to him and I am sure that very soon he will see how awesome you are and his feelings for you will change. I don’t know what the relationship between you and your cousin is, but if it is good then you should probably at some stage tell her what you plan to do. Good luck and remember, take it easy and slow. Love is sometimes a very complicated thing, but if you continue to respect others and yourself, you will do just fine.

MDC infighting deepens

$
0
0

Bitter infighting within Zimbabwe's opposition risks fatally weakening President Robert Mugabe's political foes just as the sun has begun to set on his 33-year rule.
A lasting rift within the Southern African country's battle-scarred Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) now seems inevitable.
Within a few rough days, a party faction headed by longtime MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai's erstwhile deputy Tendai Biti suspended him, and the veteran trade union leader promptly responded by expelling all involved in the move to cast him aside.
For 62-year-old Tsvangirai - who has led the party through intimidation and innumerable beatings and arrests since its founding 15 years ago - it was an unforgivable act of political fratricide.
He described the attempted party coup - which took place when both he and his deputy Thokozani Khupe were absent - as "illegal, unconstitutional, illegitimate and bogus".
The clash with Biti was a long time in the making, but the timing could hardly be worse.
Since 1999, Tsvangirai has lost three successive elections to Mugabe, whose hand rested firmly on the electoral scales each time.
The elderly leader was returned to power at the polls last year, but he is now 90.
Tsvangirai's supporters largely forgave him for the electoral defeats, but his detractors became foes when he led the MDC into a negotiated unity government with Mugabe, serving as prime minister from 2009 to 2013.
While the forced marriage helped pull Zimbabwe's crumbling economy out of free fall, prevented bloodshed and ushered in a new constitution that limits executive power, it was a political disaster for the MDC.
Mugabe, a consummate strategist, managed to reap the rewards of better government and a healthier economy while making Tsvangirai look marginal and even slightly comic.

Brewing storm

After last year's election, Biti, the MDC's secretary general and a leading light of the party, led a group that privately pressed Tsvangirai to step down without success.
Biti and his supporters have long believed that the MDC must take a more robust approach to opposing Mugabe and his powerful Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF).
They have made the forcible removal of Tsvangirai a matter of the party's survival.
"Tsvangirai has done his best in the past 15 years as opposition leader," Jacob Mafume, spokesperson for the Biti-led faction, told AFP. "He has stayed long in power and can no longer deliver."
But Tsvangirai still "seems to enjoy grassroots support" within the rump MDC, according to political analyst Dumisani Nkomo, predicting a lasting divide in the main opposition.
"It looks like a split is inevitable in the MDC. The various factions will suspend and expel each other and at the end we will have different formations," Nkomo said.
The MDC had already split once before, with violent consequences. In 2005 former secretary general Welshman Ncube led an internal rebellion to push out Tsvangirai.
Ncube's party subsequently drained a few precious votes from the MDC, although it remains a marginal force in Zimbabwean politics.

Iran president vetoes WhatsApp ban: report

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has vetoed a plan to ban WhatsApp, following a row over censorship of the popular messaging application, media reports said yesterday.
Access to social networks, including Twitter and Facebook, are routinely blocked by Iranian authorities, as are other websites considered un-Islamic or detrimental to the regime.
The policy is contentious and a proposal to filter WhatsApp has caused a rupture between Rouhani's administration and a 13-member committee responsible for Internet censorship.
The reformist Sharq daily reported that Rouhani has ordered a stop to a proposed access ban on the free messaging service.
"The issue of banning WhatsApp was raised. The president has ordered a halt on (banning) the site," Telecommunication Minister Mahmoud Vaezi was quoted as saying.
"Until the time that we have a replacement for these sites, the government opposes filtering them," he added.
According to an official at the telecommunication ministry, the ban was approved by the censorship committee but not yet implemented.
Government officials have voiced support for lifting the wider ban on social media websites.
Rouhani has promised greater tolerance on social, cultural and media issues - a vow that helped him beat his conservative opponents in the presidential election last year.
But the government has faced resistance from hardliners, who oppose a reversal on such censorship.

Namibian U-15 girls' team off to Youth Olympics

A Namibian Under-15 girls’ football team will represent Africa at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics taking place in China in August. In November 2012, a decision was taken by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the Namibia Football Association (NFA)'s girls’ U-15 team to be the sole representatives of the continent at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China. A media statement issued by the NFA on Tuesday quoted the association’s president, John Muinjo as saying he is looking forward to Namibia representing Africa. “We have invested a lot in youth football structures and we have indeed taken women’s football seriously at the association. That has won the hearts of the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) and CAF, and that’s why we were selected to be Africa’s representatives,” said Muinjo. He added that it is an honour to be selected because, amongst others things, the team will serve as a blueprint for women’s football. In the same statement, Jacky Gertze of the NFA’s Women’s Desk said it has always been the association’s wish to get maximum exposure for young talented girl footballers in order to ensure their early development into national players. “This is a proud moment for NFA and its partners FIFA, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Spar and the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, which invest tremendously in the Youth Girls Football Development initiative of the NFA,” she said. Speaking to Nampa on Tuesday, U-15 national team manager Eveline !Noreses said the team is looking forward to the competition. “The girls will be ready for the tournament, but at the moment we hope to get a number of friendly games to prepare the girls well before the tournament. We don’t just want to add up numbers...,” said !Noreses. The NFA has called up a 25-member squad comprised of players who compete in the U-15 Galz and Goals leagues in Windhoek, Eenhana, Rundu, Otjiwarongo, and Okahandja. Cape Verde will represent Africa in the boy’s event of the tournament, which will see boys and girls under the age of 15 (born between 01 January and 31 December 1999), taking part. WINDHOEK–NAMPA

‘Disappointed’ Hotto eager to bounce back

Golden Arrows, where three Namibian footballers plied their trade this season, was relegated from South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Tuesday. Defender Chris Katjiukua and midfielder Deon Hotto, who signed for Golden Arrows in January, were joined at the club by Rudolf Bester, who was on loan from Orlando Pirates, suffered the ignominy of having failed to help the club stave off relegation. Speaking to Namibian Sun yesterday, Hotto telephonically described the mood surrounding the club as quite sombre at the moment. “We are very disappointed and everybody’s head is down,” he said. “We are all waiting to hear what is next,” he added in reference to the team now having to campaign in the second tier of South African football. Arrows needed to avoid defeat against AmaZulu on Tuesday but succumbed to a solitary goal scored by Ayanda Dlamini in the 81st minute to be officially relegated; having spent most of the season languishing at the bottom of the PSL log. Of the three Namibians only Bester , who was a 46th minute substitute, played any part in the match with Hotto out of action following an ankle injury while Katjiukua only recently returned after a spell on the sidelines due to ill health. The game was Bester’s 17th appearance for Arrows in the PSL having scored three goals prior to the club’s final PSL game on Saturday. Bester also appeared in two Telkom Knockout Cup matches for the Durban club; scoring once. Katjiukua only managed three games before illness laid him low while Hotto played in eight matches during the season. It is not clear whether all three will continue playing for Arrows next season with Hotto stating that a few teams has shown interest in him. “From my side, there are two PSL teams that want me but the owner [Mato Madlala] told me she doesn’t want me to go… I think I’m still young and to repay them for having faith in me, I will go down with them [Arrows]. “I’m sure I can still learn more and help the team bounce back,” he said. The midfielder goes on to describe his experience playing in the PSL as very educational, even though his team has now been relegated. “Playing here [in the PSL] is very nice but tough as well. You have to be very smart because the game is much quicker compared to back home,” he explains. “And I can say there is big difference from the Hotto who played in Namibia compared to now,” he states. Arrows will bring their PSL curtain down with a clash against Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. Most productive Namibia had about 12 players signed to clubs in the PSL this season with only striker Henrico Botes, midfielders Ronald Ketjijere and Heinrich Isaacks, and defender Willem Mwedihanga joining Bester in having gotten into double figures in terms of appearances. AmaZulu’s Mwedihanga made his 13th appearance against Arrows on Tuesday while Isaacks played his 19th game when Maritzburg United upset the form book by beating Bidvest Wits 1-0. Ketjijere could not help University of Pretoria to avoid a 1-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs during his 22nd start for AmaTuks. Botes, who appears to out injured at Platinum Stars, has notched up 15 games in the league for the Rustenburg outfit while playing four matches each in the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout Cup; tournaments that Stars won. Goalkeeper Virgil Vries has six appearances for Maritzburg in various competitions while Larry Horaeb played eight times for AmaZulu before injury forced him off. Pineas Jacob (two games) and Sadney Urikhob (three games) only turned out for AmaZulu during the first leg of the league while Petrus Shitembi did not feature for the club as he was not registered. The PSL will come to an end this Saturday.

Voting isn't really about politics

$

I must have voted at least 10 times in my life in elections, by-elections and referendums for a range of parties and individuals. It’s not a new experience, but it gets to me every single time. Even when I really think the chances of politicians bringing about real change is remote.
In the last day I have realised that voting isn’t really about politics. I have just re-read that sentence, and did a bit of a double take, and then realised I mean it.
Yes, this is when political parties square up to re-divide their slice of the pie, and to find out how many members they will be able to send to Parliament, and who controls which province. That’s what puts the smile on their faces.
But what puts the smile on the voters’ faces?
I went to vote at the primary school round the corner from my home. You get the picture - asphalt quads, face brick walls and yellow curtains in the school hall. (What is it about short yellow curtains that make them indispensable to every single primary school I have ever been in?).

The queue
I waited until 16:00 when the queue was no longer snaking out the front door of the voting station, grabbed my ID and in I went. In the queue there were old Muslim grannies, a builder in his blue overall, an old white couple, a young Muslim family with two babies in tow and a pretty young black woman who had obviously interrupted her braiding session to come and vote. Half the braids were done and the other half of her head was still awaiting the ministrations of the hairdresser. But braiding is a long process and might not be finished before the voting stations closed. Voting first, braiding second.
It took about 10 minutes to get to the front of the queue, and I had time to observe those who were leaving the voting station, having just cast their vote. Every single one of them was beaming. And that’s when I realised that something else was going on here besides politics.

You belong
Elections make people feel heard and validated. There’s something about finding your name on the list and having your ID scanned that makes you feel as if you belong. For one day everyone is of equal importance (and that’s something in one of the most unequal societies in the world). This is one day you share an experience with 25 million other South Africans. The voting process itself brings about a certain solidarity, regardless of who you vote for.
This is the day that belongs to the 95% of ordinary South Africans who make up the very fabric of our society. They will never make the news, few people will ever know who they are. But most of them make a daily contribution to the communities in which they find themselves. Without them, everything would grind to a halt.
I have heard that on election day in 1994 it was the one day in the country’s history on which not a single serious crime was reported at any police station in South Africa. I want to believe that it is true - not only because criminals were also waiting all day in long queues to vote, but because elections bring out something positive and community-minded in just about everyone. Even Julius Malema was sedate and polite and uncharacteristically overawed as he escorted his granny into the polling station in Polokwane on Wednesday.

A raw edge
Desmond Tutu reminded everyone that many people died to give all South Africans the right to vote, which gives the occasion a certain raw edge in this region. A raw edge you probably wouldn’t find in an election in Finland or Canada.
I got to the front of the queue and was whisked through the admin process with great efficiency. I had my thumb marked, was given my ballot papers and headed for the cardboard booth.
And then it happened. For a second I felt overwhelmed by the solemnity of the occasion. I drew my crosses, and left. With a very large smile on my face.
I have, I am afraid, little faith in politics or career politicians. This is why I get so angry when they disappoint the millions of beaming voters. But for one day, allow me the illusion that voting can really change things. We all need it desperately.
I have been glued to the TV election results all night and am now off to go and see whether the details have come in from remote regions in the Northern Cape and Limpopo. From Askham to Alice to Diepsloot – for one day every single person makes up a strand of the fabric that binds us all together.

Big daddy Mushe

He may have left the NAMAs last weekend without an award, but Mushe certainly came off as Daddy of the Year at glittering event in Swakopmund. Read more about this and all the other gossip from the NAMAs and elsewhere on page 19.

Liz and Ben10 ex at each other’s throats
Earlier this year pssst! reported that television personality Liz Ross found herself a Ben10 in the form of a member of Kwaito boy band X-Bantuans. Well, it seems their romance was short-lived, as just recently the two were embroiled in what seemed like a nasty social network fight. Anyway, it seems Liz has a new boyfriend anyway, showing that she moves on pretty fast it. However, a few days ago her ex posted on her Facebook wall, asking her to leave him alone. Liz didn’t take the public humiliation lightly and came out guns blazing, asking for her money back. While pssst! enjoys a good Facebook catfight like anyone else, sometimes this kind of dirty laundry should just stay in the basket

Enough of the Mushe mocking!
pssst! thinks it’s very unfortunate that people on social networks mocked Mushe for pitching up at the NAMAs with his two children. The two kids were absolutely adorable. pssst! thinks it’s great that Mushe is taking the lead in showing other young men that they should stick around and raise their kids. In the past, Mushe was criticised for having too many girlfriends and now he is being criticised for being a loving daddy. That does not seem fair. Even though the awards show may have been disappointing for Mushe, at least he had his kids there to comfort him. Give the guy a break. Someone even said the child kept asking Mushe when he is going on stage to accept an award. Nee tog, you don’t kick a man when he is down.

Dogg, Gazza butter up Hage
It’s no secret that everyone is trying to cement their membership of Team Hage, since its election year. But like many other people, pssst! was shocked at the desperation of Gazza, The Dogg and Castro showed at the NAMAs. Don’t they know that no matter how hard they try, it is Ndilimani who will be travelling with Hage when it’s time to campaign for the general election in earnest? For a brief moment it even seemed like The Dogg and Gazza were competing for the Biggest Comrade title. First The Dogg said everyone must vote for Swapo, then Gazza gave a touching speech about Cassinga. It all ended with Gazza polishing Hage’s shoes. My brothers, these antics are embarrassing and really have no place at a music awards show.

Lettie’s Grade 12 farewell dress
Lettie is another artist who has come under fire in the aftermath of the NAMAs for donning what seemed like a Grade 12 farewell dress from back in the day. Remember those matric dresses look like they were made from curtains? Well Lettie, according to her critics on Twitter and Facebook was wearing one of those. And as if that’s was not enough, our favourite Khorixas girl wore Green Cross plakkies. Of course, we agree that her winning is dream come, even in those plakkies. Lettie just has that childlike quality that pssst! absolutely adores and we want to see her continue to shine, but not in shiny dresses.

Stella’s old pair
We all love Stella, but over the years she has repeatedly sung only two songs when called upon to perform publically. Some would call her a two-hit wonder. However, it was not that pair of songs, but her pair of shoes of that attracted attention at the NAMAs in Swakopmund last weekend. Not only did Stella perform that one song at the NAMAs that we all know is her oldest of the two she normally belts out, she also decided to wear red shoes that looked like they were more than four decades old. And then halfway through the Damara Punch singer’s performance, she decided to kick them off. She had everyone in stitches when she forgot her shoes on stage afterward, or maybe she just decided she did not want them anymore. Anyway, it’s time for a new pair of songs and a new pair of shoes Stella!

As predicted, tribal print was a huge hit on the NAMAs blue carpet last weekend. The secret is keeping it simple and not making the outfit look too busy.

Lethal 1
Okay, so someone had an extra piece of leather left over from making a couch and decided to donate it to her. She should be charged with leather abuse.

Lethal 2
Wearing sunglasses at night always results in an immediate Fashion Police arrest warrant being issued for you. But this fashion atrocity goes much further and needs to be avoided at all costs.

Siemens to buy Rolls-Royce assets

German engineering giant Siemens this week announced it would buy the energy production arm of Britain's Rolls Royce for €950 million (N$13.7 billion) to strengthen its standing in the oil and gas industry.
"Siemens is acquiring the Rolls-Royce Energy aero-derivative gas turbine and compressor business and thereby strengthening its position in the growing oil and gas industry as well as in the field of decentralized power generation," the firm said in a statement.
"The transaction is expected to close before the end of December 2014."
Originally developed for use in the aviation industry, Rolls-Royce Energy's compact and highly efficient gas turbines are "an attractive power supply option in the oil and gas industry", especially on off-shore oil platforms where space is limited, Siemens said.
The acquired business has around 2 400 employees, and delivered revenue of some €1.1 billion (N$15.8 billion) in 2013.
Siemens, which unveiled a new strategic plan to focus on the growth fields of electrification, automation and digitalisation dubbed "Vision 2020", also announced plans to publicly list its audiology business which makes hearing instruments.
The company said a streamlining of its organisational structures to reduce bureaucracy and cut costs by 2016 will result in a productivity increase of €1bn (N$14.7 billion).

Local rugby legends to take on Clems Pirates

Rugby veterans have dusted off their gear ahead of a Namibian Legends team playing two very unique matches against English side Clems Pirates. The first of these games will take place tomorrow at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium. The English team is renown for their sheer enthusiasm, terrific tours and fundraising efforts. The second match will take place Wednesday. Pirates have a rich history, as it was started by brothers Andrew and Stephen Oxenham as a single match to celebrate the latter’s 40th birthday. With the help of their generous sponsor, Thompsons of Prudhoe, over 150 players have represented the club at home and abroad. The first tour was to Edinburgh and since then they have played around the globe including in South Africa, Germany, Argentina, Uruguay, Holland, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Nice, Cuba, Spain, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and most recently in Palma, Majorca. While on tour they also present local schools with kit and other goodies. Back in England, Clem’s Pirates have donated a total of almost £60 000 (N$1.05 million) to good causes, including charities such as Cystic Fibrosis, St Cuthbert’s Hospice, the North East Air Ambulance, Help for Heroes, Tabitha’s Toys, CRUK, The NRU will choose a school that will benefit from the generous handouts at the match tomorrow and the handover will be done next Wednesday. The school that will be chosen will be selected based who has the most spectators attending the match. Schools are thus encouraged to invite pupils and parents to attend the match and at the entrance the spectators will be asked to write the name of the school that invited them. The school with the most spectators invited will win. In addition to the main match, the NRU also arranged a number of other games for the rugby loving public. The Namibia Under-16 Grant Khomo team will play against an Affies Invitational team at 11:00. The U-18 Craven Week team will play against a Wanderers third team at 12:00. The curtain raiser to the main match will be Central against West 13:30 with the main match starting at 15:00. Entrance for the day will be N$10 per person, children included. Wednesday’s match will take place at 18:00. All matches will take place at the Hage Geingob stadium, and all rugby lovers are invited to attend and support the youth and the legends. Namibian Legends team: 1. Eben Smith 2. Cor van Tonder 3. JM Meyer 4. Heino Senekal 5. Hardus Swart 6. Schalk van der Merwe 7. Herman Lintvelt 8. Sybrand de Beer 9. Ronaldo Pedro 10. Rudi van Vuuren 11. Deon Mouton 12. Corne Powell 13. Attie Samuelson 14. Vince Dreyer 15. Jaco Kotze 16. Johan Zaayman 17. Jood Opperman 18. Gerald Loubser 19. Deon Gouws 20. Jaco Kotze 21. Citizens aim to extend ride on wave of success

Citizens football club can cap a period of great success with an appearance in the final of domestic football’s premier knockout tournament when they take on United Stars tomorrow. The team, which recently won promotion to the MTC Namibia Premier League (NPL) after winning the Southern Stream First Division (SSFD), will now attempt to go one better by overcoming Stars in the semi-finals of the Bidvest Namibia Cup; a match that is set to take place at 15:00 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium. Previously known as Monitronics, the Windhoek based team will hope to use the fact that they will be playing at a familiar venue to their advantage. In addition to that, the team boasts some experienced campaigners like defender Robert Gurirab, midfield ace Berries Rooi and striker Henry ‘Tsiki’ Somseb with the latter duo having played in the NPL before. But it is arguably the form of Zimbabwean playmaker, Ronald Chari that will ultimately determine if Citizens will get a place in the final of the ‘Cup of Dreams’ as some have come to dub the tournament. Chari has proven to be both industrious and effective as an attacking tool for the team as almost every forward Citizens move involves him. The team’s coach, George Ochurub is excited about the prospect of playing in a major final. “We have nothing to lose,” he told nfa.org.na yesterday. “This is our best chance of reaching a final, our first final of this magnitude… “This is the ‘Cup of Dreams’ and… we dream of the final appearance and come Saturday, United Stars will face a determined side,” he added. But while Citizens may be confident, it will not all be plain sailing as they will face a United Stars team that is full of running and equally determined to reach the final having lost out at the same stage last year. This tie will be the first of two semi-finals matches to be played at the venue with Tura Magic set to face African Stars in the late kickoff (17:00). In the previous round, Magic won 2-1 to sent Black Africa tumbling out of the tournament while ‘Stalile’ left it late before dispatching Mountain Rangers 6-2. Fun for fans The organisers’ of the tournament, meanwhile, have gone the extra mile to ensure that tomorrow’s event is not only enjoyable but also great fun. Bidvest Namibia’s Director of Commercial and Business Development Theo Mberirua expressed excitement about the upcoming matches. “After months of excitement and some super [football] we are now in the final stages of the cup and the semi-finals this weekend are sure to get the heart’s pumping of all Namibian soccer fans,” he said in a statement. Mberirua went on to remind fans that they stand a great chance of winning some extra cash with Bidvest in the “Selfie”-competition. “N$500 is up for grabs,” he said before explaining that in order to take part fans have to “take a fun and creative selfie while wearing Bidvest Namibia Cup regalia” at tomorrow’s matches. “[Fans must then] WhatsApp the selfie to 081 692 3997. The judges will then choose the winners,” he said. Other fun activities planned for tomorrow’s games are branded giveaways for the first 300 supporters at the gate, while two fans stand a chance of having their tickets upgraded to VIP passes. Aspiring footballers and ardent fans can further win some extra prizes in the soccer fan ‘Goal-Score' challenge during half-time. WINDHOEK-HECTOR MAWONGA

Zimbabwe will resume steel production within two years, implementing a long delayed joint venture with India's Essar Africa Holdings Limited, a cabinet minister said on Friday.
"The initial phase of the project will involve the revival of NewZim Steel to a production capacity of 500 000 metric tonnes of liquid steel within 24 months," Industry and Commerce Minister Mike Bimha said at a press conference in the capital Harare.
"We are now going to see the implementation of the project."
Essar Africa Holdings said it will inject an initial US$650 million (N$6.8 billion) to resuscitating production with funds going to buy new plant equipment and construction of a 600 megawatt thermal power station.
NewZim Steel is a joint venture company between Essar and the Zimbabwe government formed in 2009, rebranding the old Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company (Zisco).
Operations were delayed following disagreements over mineral rights.
The Indian firm controls a 54% stake in the joint venture project while the government controls the rest.
Firdhose Coovadia, director of Essar Africa, Middle East and Turkey said NewZim Steel will settle over US$400 million (N$4.2 billion) in debt which was taken from Zisco.
Zimbabwe's economy has been on a downturn for over a decade worsened by low foreign investment blamed on government policies including the controversial law which forces foreign businesses to cede a majority of shares to local partners.

AU wants easy visa process for tourists

A number of steps are required to ensure Africa increases its share of the global tourism market, African Union Commission chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said last Friday.
Eliminating complicated visa processes, liberalising air routes, and eliminating poaching were all required for Africa to gain a greater share of the global tourism market, she told a tourism industry indaba in Durban.
Dlamini-Zuma said tourist wanted to visit but were not interested in having to face administrative hurdles.
"We must work on a simplified visa and joint visas," she said, adding that this would make travelling between countries easier for tourists.
She said the "scourge of poaching" posed a major threat to tourism.
"The scale of poaching shows the existence of a well organised crime ring (working) with high-ranking public officials."
The loss of wildlife would be catastrophic for future generations as well as future tourism benefits.
She said the AU was aiming to make Africa the preferred travel destination by 2063, but much needed to be done before then.
Dlamini-Zuma said that apart from attracting overseas tourists, Africa also needed to tap into the continent's own 300 million-strong middle class with its growing disposable income.
"We must ensure they spend it (the disposable income) on the continent."

No rush to regulate forex over fixing scandal

Governments should not leap into full-scale regulation of currency trading in the wake of claims that leading banks rigged market benchmarks, a member of the UK parliament committee overseeing the financial sector said on Friday.
Banks and other institutional players in the foreign exchange industry are watching global regulators nervously for signs of any appetite for a shake-up of what to date has been the world's biggest self-regulated financial market.
They say putting currency trading on the sort of exchanges used for shares, derivatives and other globally-traded assets, or simply regulating it more heavily, would only drive up costs in a market which has grown steadily more efficient for business over the past decade.
Andy Love, a member of the British parliament's Treasury Select Committee, said that as long as the industry took steps itself to reform the issues around "fixing" benchmarks and possible collusion at the centre of the scandal, there should be no rush to regulate the market heavily.
"I think only in the circumstances where it was felt that the damage to public confidence was so great and the response of the industry so limited, would it be felt that regulation was warranted," Love said.
No plans for regulating the forex market have been put forward so far in Europe but any settlements by banks for manipulating forex benchmarks would almost certainly trigger steps to change that piece of the market, as it did when lenders were fined for rigging the Libor benchmark interest rates.
Momentum for new rules could build when the European Union resumes work in the autumn on a law to regulate benchmarks, and the G20's Financial Stability Board reports in coming months on Libor and forex markets.
But the head of Britain's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Martin Wheatley, said last year that it would be a big step for regulators to decide that forex needed to be a formally regulated market.
"If its necessary in order to have the trust and confidence for the market place to be regulated then so be it," Love said.
"But I think we need to wait and see how the industry responds and how deep the forex scandal goes before we decide if a regulatory response is the appropriate one."
