Auntie Nangy

I only have one night stands Dear Auntie Nangy I am a 29-year-old guy and every time I want to have someone to share my life with, it always end up in a one-night stand or just only for sex. What must I do? Change your mindset. You are the only one in your life that can make choices for you and no one else. If you do end up in a situation of your own making, you have only yourself to blame. I am not saying this to be harsh, but to tell you that a changed mindset will change you. You obviously have a lot of love to give, but you should take time and not get involved in a sexual relationship right off the bat. If you meet someone that you like, take it slow. Get to know the person and allow things to develop, don’t force it. Remember, only you are in command of your future. Take care. Emergency contraceptives Dear Auntie Nangy Is it possible for me to get a baby auntie? I’m a girl of 24 years and I only menstruate when I use certain emergency contraceptive tablets. Would it be possible for me to get a baby? Using emergency contraceptive pills - also called the morning after pills - in case a condom broke or slipped off is a safe. Depending on how soon after unprotected sex it is taken, quite effective way of protecting against unwanted pregnancies. Unfortunately, these pills are open to abuse as it is easily available and control over the dispensing of such is almost impossible to enforce. Girls who use these pills as a way of normal contraception are taking risks as it is not healthy to haphazardly use a pill that affects your hormones, apart from the fact that it offers no protection against sexually Transmitted infections (STIs). Emergency contraceptive pills are also not nearly as effective as a correctly used condom and the effectiveness declines sharply the longer the period between having had unprotected sex and taking the pill becomes. The fact that you say that you only menstruate when you use these pills is very worrisome and you should see a doctor as soon as possible as this condition is not normal. He impregnated her accidentally Dear Auntie Nangy I am 24 and my boyfriend is 31. We have been together for two years now and we have a baby boy together. My problem is that this guy impregnated another lady after me and when I found out about it he asked for my forgiveness and said he did it accidentally. I know he loves me, but when I told him that I don’t want to be with him anymore he told me I should not leave him because he doesn’t love the other lady. Now I don’t know what to do, please help me auntie. I’m having a hard time trying to imagine how a man can impregnate a woman accidentally. Was he sleepwalking at the time? “Accidentally” also sounds like a word that is used by someone who does not want to take responsibility for their actions. This is something that you have to think about as well going forward. Anyway, it may be that he does not love this other girl, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has an obligation and responsibility towards her and his child, the same as he does to you. Nobody is perfect and he might be truly remorseful and might never cheat on you again but it is up to you to forgive him. If you know that he is serious in asking for your forgiveness and you are sure that you can live with the consequences of his action, then you might give him another chance, but that is entirely up to you. You do have to realise though that this other lady and their child will be a part of your life even though it will not be a love or physical relationship. This is something you will have to live with. He wants me back Dear Auntie Nangy I met my boyfriend when I was 16 and he was already in a relationship. I got pregnant and I we had two children when he dumped me and went back to his first love. He came back to me now and is born again and is telling me that he doesn’t want a relationship, but want to get married and be with his children and wife. What must I do? This guy dumped you once before when you needed him most so I think you must be very sure that you can trust him and just saying that he is born again is not good enough as far as I’m concerned. When he came back to you did he also dump his “first love” and their children? I am not saying that he are indeed a changed man, but you must just be very sure that you can forgive him and be able to trust him again. Unfortunately you don’t say if he has been a good father and if he supported you during the period he was not with you, but if he did that it would be a big plus as far as I am concerned. If he did not, then it looks to me that he is not a trustworthy man that takes responsibility for his actions. Ultimately the choice is yours, but marriage is a big step and auntie would not like for you to get hurt again.

Twitter tumbles as user growth disappoints

The popular messaging platform Twitter last week reported a jump in revenues but disappointing growth in users.
The net loss for the first quarter amounted to US$132 million (N$1.4 billion), wider than the US$27 million (N$286.2 million) deficit a year earlier, largely due to a rise in stock compensation, Twitter said in its earnings statement.
Revenues grew 119% from a year ago to US$250 million (N$2.7 billion), and monthly active users rose to 255 million.
Twitter shares plunged 10.6% to US$38.08 (N$403.7) in after-hours trade even though the revenue figures were better than expected.
That was the lowest since the market debut last November.
"The number everyone wants to see get bigger faster is average monthly active users," said Paul Ausick at 24/7 Wall Street.
Ausick said the gain in users was 25% for the year but just 5.8% over the past quarter.
"These numbers are good, but not good enough," Ausick said in a blog post.
"The consensus estimate for MAUs was 257 million and that relatively small difference has crushed the shares in after-hours."
Arvind Bhatia, analyst at Sterne Agee, said the results were mixed.
"User metrics, including reach and engagement, were slightly better than the fourth quarter but not as strong as the street expected," he said in a research note.
Market action in the tech sector has also been volatile in recent weeks amid fears of a bubble based on the stretched valuations of some companies.

Engaging new users

Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo put a positive spin on the results.
"We had a great first quarter," Costolo said on the company's earnings call.
He added that "revenue growth accelerated" and that the company was making progress on its plans including "making Twitter more visually engaging".
Costolo added that people were not turning away from Twitter.
"Our net new users are just as engaged as our existing users, which is great," he said.
Costolo said that with the integration of the mobile advertising startup MoPub, "we now reach more than one billion (Apple) iOS and Android users each month, making us one of the largest in-app mobile ad exchanges in the world and the only one at scale to offer native in-app advertising."
Twitter made a splash last year on Wall Street with a surge on its market debut, but its shares have struggled since then amid doubts on its pace of growth and progress toward profitability.
Using a popular Wall Street measure excluding special items, Twitter essentially broke even on a per-share basis, according to its quarterly report.
Twitter said the number of monthly active users was up 25% from a year ago at 255 million, and 198 million were on mobile devices.
Advertising revenue hit US$226 million (N$2.4 billion), an increase of 125% over the past year, with mobile accounting for roughly 80% of the total.
According to the research firm eMarketer, Twitter's US mobile ad revenues are expected to grow 86% this year, giving the platform a 3.2% market share.
A recent Forrester Research study found 22% of US online adults visit Twitter at least monthly compared to Facebook's 72%.

Defections, opportunism and roller-coaster politics

$
0
0

The hour for party defections, political opportunism and prostitution and roller-coaster politics is at hand. The politics of defections has become a norm in Namibia. It exists worldwide. The truth, however, is that many who find it expedient to dump their parties soon flock back to the same parties when things do not go their way at their new political homes.
In the defence of this practice, most political defectors and commentators usually find comfort in the words of Stanley Baldwin, the British Conservative statesman who once said: “I would rather be an opportunist and float than go to the bottom with my principles around my neck.” That is the philosophy of political opportunists and defectors. It is the politics of unprincipled souls and political wanderers who are ideologically empty, standing for nothing and effectively open to everything.
Yes, political defections have produced some amazing results, especially when done on the basis of principles. Hilary Clinton was once a hardcore Republican. She canvassed support and campaigned for Republican Richard Nixon for President. She worked for Republican Barry Goldwater’s campaign in 1964, and was even elected president of Wellesley College’s Young Republican club. She left the Republican Party and joined the Democrats because she disagreed with the Republican Party’s stance on the Vietnam War. Ronald Reagan, famously known for conditionally linking Namibia’s independence to the withdrawal of Cuban troops from Angola, was first a Democrat before he became a Republican. He vigorously campaigned for Democratic Senate Candidate Helen Douglas in 1950 and encouraged Dwight D. Eisenhower to run for president in 1952. His political views shifted to the extreme right when he started working for General Electric. These examples, and many others, indicate the importance of principles, ideology and steadfastness to politics which is lacking in our political roller coasters.
It is premature and an act of desperation to celebrate proven unprincipled political defectors. The compromises that our political parties make in welcoming chronic political defectors, taking into consideration the inconsistencies they have shown, underscore the value-free nature of our politics. How do we explain a situation where one person defects from one party to another, back to the old party and off to another, in a less than ten years and under circumstances that celebrate disregard for principles? More often than not, these political defectors rapidly enjoy the publicity and other benefits such as faster access to party membership cards and other undisclosed benefits that do not accrue to long serving, principled and loyal party members.
Obviously, at this time of elections, every party is targeting the voting povo – irrespective of their character or principles. It is however necessary that political parties should seek men and women of political integrity to lead the voting povo towards voting for their parties. Political integrity typically demands and attracts principled characters and positions. Political chameleons can easily dilute and tarnish the image of a party. They are at most good riddance to bad rubbish.
Continuous political opportunism ultimately reduces the scope of politics to a visionless realpolitik or a barren pragmatism that may only function to maintain the status quo. It is a mammoth task to reconcile self-interest, which is inherent in most, if not all defectors, with the general interest of the party genuinely and durably. In most cases, we end up with pervasive moral double standards. The alarming rate of defections usually cringes to the lack of a strong party political ideology. What are the real reasons for defections in Namibia? Could they be related to ideologies, party constitutional ambiguity, principles, leadership qualities, unfaithfulness of some politicians to their constituents, sheer opportunism, or the philosophy of “vakwetu vaya na tse ha tuyi ko Djambia” – in other words “others have crossed over, therefore we are also crossing over” no matter what is on the other side?
The mark of principled politicians is one that portrays their principled characteristics of faithfulness and loyalty to their political home; they usually continue to be members of the party for the rest of their lives; they stick with their party through thick and thin; they stay despite occasional or regular conflicts with fellow party members; they stay even when they believe or think that the party has made mistakes; and they stay even if the party does not provide them with the advancement, recognition or promotion they feel they deserve. They stay because they see their party as the bigger picture and any disappointments or tensions that their party inflicts on them as the smaller picture. They stay because they believe in the philosophy and ideology of the party. These are type of politicians that Namibia needs.

Cassinga massacre is told in political propaganda fashion

$
0
0

We are a few days away from the annual Cassinga Day commemoration. That is the day when Namibians honour the sons and daughters of the soil who were massacred at Cassinga, Angola, on May 4, 1978.
Let their souls rest in eternal peace!
Like it has become customary, survivors will share with us their experiences of the horror attack and Swapo Party politicians will dominate the airwaves demonising the racist regime while practically whitewashing the liberation movement.
As it is also customary, we will once again not hear the other side of the story. We will once again be bombarded with the same one-sided story. The story will be decorated with images collected from the Apartheid archives. In the process, fact and fiction are deliberately mixed and the whole affair becomes nothing but a ridiculous propaganda game.
Apparently that is how we Namibians honour our dead!
Having said that, I am interested in history - Namibian history in particular!
However, to my utter dismay I have found that many documents purporting to be historic records are not accurate at all and cannot withstand critical analysis.
Most papers presented as history are in fact pieces of political propaganda.
The story of Cassinga, one of the saddest events of our liberation struggle, is badly distorted. That is because those who recorded the events were not really interested in recording history as honestly and as humanly possible.
They prioritised propaganda, presenting their culpable failures dressed up like big achievements.
I have had a copy of Annemarie Heywood’s book, ‘The Cassinga Event’, for many years but I did not have the privilege of owning a copy of Founding President’s autobiography, ‘Where Others Wavered’. However, I have had the privilege of reading excerpts in the State-owned New Era newspaper.
I have to be blunt here. If those excerpts faithfully represent what is recorded in Nujoma’s book, then that book must be one big mess just like Heywood’s.
Heywood is totally biased, dismissing things that make more sense as “South African propaganda” while wholeheartedly accepting Swapo’s version as “fact” even where it does not make sense.
Namibians have been vocal, and rightly so, when South Africans concealed their losses, but I have yet to meet a Namibian historian who is equally vocal about Swapo’s concealment of losses.
Almost all Swapo publications speak of 300 lightly armed guerrillas at Cassinga at the time of the attack, but when casualty figures are presented, we are told that 615 refugees (298 children, 147 elderly or handicapped men, and 170 women) were killed. No death of a single PLAN fighter is mentioned.
A miracle perhaps!
Yet the South Africans who actually revealed their casualties and even listed their names, are still criticised for allegedly concealing the real number of their dead.
No one seems prepared to question the dubious claim by Swapo and some Cassinga survivors that nerve gas was used in the attack. If it was used, it was shamefully ineffective. Nerve gas dropped in a camp of 4 098 refugees and 300 PLAN fighters, yet all 300 PLAN fighters and 3 483 refugees managed to escape? Even the attacking paratroopers were not wearing masks. Was it perhaps a ‘racist’ nerve gas that affects black people only?
Additionally, despite the nerve gas, the 300 ‘lightly armed’ guerrillas still managed to shoot down three SA aircraft and kill 102 soldiers while losing none of their own. I suspect that those figures are fraudulent, to say the least!
There are many other unanswered questions like: If Cassinga was a refugee camp, why was a guerrilla battalion stationed there, thereby giving the enemy a pretext to attack the camp? Why was PLAN commander Dimo Amaambo housed in a refugee camp? Was he using refugees as human shield?
Turning to Nujoma’s version, I find it totally untrustworthy. It claims among others that six months after Cassinga massacre PLAN scored many successes including the destruction of Casspir APCs. But it is a well-known fact that the Casspir APC was not manufactured before 1979 and did not enter service before 1980. How could it be destroyed six months after the Cassinga massacre of May 1978?
Nujoma also places the capture of Johan van der Mescht among post-Cassinga PLAN successes, but Van der Mescht was captured in February 1978, two months before the Cassinga massacre.
It is disgusting when history is distorted for political propaganda purposes. That is actually a sign of political bankruptcy and a disservice to future generations.

Facebook fuels bad body image

$
0
0

Too much time on Facebook may take a toll on a young woman's sense of self-esteem, particularly how she feels about her body, a new study suggests.
The study surveyed 881 female college students. They were asked questions about their Facebook use within the past month, including how often they visited the site, how long they typically spent there and what their favourite activities were.
One question, for example, asked the women, "When looking at someone else's photos on Facebook, how much attention do you pay to: 1) how they dress, and 2) their body?"

Body image comparison
The women were also asked about their eating habits and body image, as well as their current weight, ideal weight and class rank.
The average weight of women in the study was 67 kg, but most wanted to weigh about 9 kgs less than that. On average, they pegged their ideal weight at around 59 kg.
Most spent about 80 minutes on Facebook every day. The most popular activities were reading the news feed and looking at photos, according to the study.
Spending more time on Facebook was linked to a significantly greater likelihood that a woman would feel bad about her own body, the study revealed. It also was tied to greater odds that she would compare herself to others.
That was especially true if she felt like she needed to lose weight, the researchers noted.
However, women who wanted to gain or maintain their weight did not feel bad about themselves after logging on to the social networking site.
While the study found an association between Facebook use and poor body image, it was not designed to prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Presenting their ideal self
The research was to be presented at the International Communication Association annual conference, in Seattle. Research presented at meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
"Women tend to present their ideal self on Facebook, not necessarily their actual, true self," said study author Petya Eckler, who is lecturer in journalism at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.
Eckler said many people Photoshop their pictures before posting or they use an app like SkinneePix, which claims to shave pounds off a selfie.
Women who compare themselves to these idealised photos may come away feeling inferior, Eckler noted, adding that she worries that it could set vulnerable young women up for an eating disorder.
"Feeling negatively about yourself and increased body comparison is sort of the first step towards disordered eating. Not in everyone, but that's definitely one of the phases women go through," she said.

Worrisome trends
This study didn't find a link between full-blown eating disorders and Facebook use, but previous studies have identified some worrisome trends.
In a study published last year in the Journal of Affective Disorders, April Smith, an assistant professor of psychology at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and her team surveyed 232 college women and followed them for 30 days to see if their Facebook use influenced how they felt about their bodies.
"We didn't see an increase in eating disorders, per se, but we did see an increase in body image dissatisfaction and disordered eating behaviours," Smith said.
Smith's study found that the frequency of certain kinds of behaviours on Facebook predicted whether the women engaged in binge-eating episodes a month later.

Social comparisons
"It's a tendency to really seek social evaluations or negative social evaluations, or to engage in a lot of social comparisons," Smith said.
She said posting negative status updates like "Oh, I just bombed my psych test" or "I can't believe I just ate that whole bag of M&Ms" are ways of testing your friends to see how they'll respond.
The social comparison aspect comes in when women read other people's status updates and are influenced by those updates.
"For example, you see your friend is going to a party that you weren't invited to or got a job that you applied for, and those kinds of upward comparisons have the tendency to make you feel worse about yourself," Smith explained.
Another study found that women who have a tendency to ‘untag’ themselves in photos they consider unflattering could also be suffering from poor body image. So-called "tags" are used to identify by name the people who appear in photos on Facebook.
"I think it's really important for young people to try to be conscientious about their motivations for using Facebook – their motivations for posting updates and pictures, and also how they feel after using Facebook," Smith said.

Black Africa, Orlando Pirates in massive tie

The Sam Nujoma Stadium will tonight be the venue of a massive match in the MTC Namibia Premier League (NPL) with Black Africa hosting Orlando Pirates at 19:00. While the teams share a long historical rivalry, the ante is sure to be lifted to new heights as both are still in firm contention to win this season’s league. BA is currently in control as they lead the standings with 39 points, while Pirates are on 34 points. But that could all change if the Buccaneers manage a victory tonight and they get the points from their clash against African Stars. (The outstanding minutes of this abandoned match is set to be played on May 6 with Pirates leading 2-0). This is something Pirates coach, Ali Akan is looking forward to achieving. “If we get those three points [from the Stars game] and win [tonight] then we can start dreaming,” he said yesterday. The Turkish coach admitted that achieving that will be far from easy. “We are playing the Namibian champions and it [winning] will not be easy… It is a big derby match and one of the biggest games in the league. So things will be tough for both teams,” he stated. Akan added that while the two teams share a great rivalry, it has always been one of mutual respect and it is therefore a bitter taste in the mouth when an official does not appreciate that history. “The two teams share a history of being friends off the field but unfortunately what their PRO [Cassius Moeti] said in his press release did not show respect,” he reflected of Moeti’s arrogant claims that the rest of the teams in the NPL are just placeholders with BA assured of winning the league. “We respect all teams and we want to give the game for our fans,” said Akan. The former Civics, African Stars and Ramblers coach has formed Pirates into a formidable –even if slightly underrated- side that has surprised many by still being in the title race at this stage. Akan said that his recipe of “giving the players confidence” has been complimented by having a small tightly knitted squad. “We only have 18 players so everybody is getting game time and the morale is high because the players are close to each other… We do not have the depth of BA or Stars but my players have got heart,” he said before adding that Pirates will fight during their last four matches. “I have sleepless nights but we’ll fight because it [the league chase] can move anywhere,” he said. Tickets for tonight’s match are set at N$50 and are available at Computicket outlets, Soccer House and BA’s offices. In tomorrow’s clashes, Tigers will be looking to bounce back following their 3-0 loss to BA during the previous round of fixtures when they travel to Swakopmund to take on Blue Boys at the Vineta Central Stadium. Also on the road will be Civics who will take on Rundu Chiefs at the Rundu Sport Stadium while United Stars face Blue Waters at the Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay. The only match taking place in the capital will see Tura Magic hosting Eleven Arrows at the Sam Nujoma Stadium. All these matches are set to start at 15:00. African Stars beat Ramblers 2-0 with defender Ferdinand Karongee and an own goal by former Brave Warriors midfielder Oliver Risser, who joined the Pionierspark side sometime in March, providing the goals. The result saw ‘The Samba Boys’, who are now on 36 points, take second place ahead of this weekend’s matches.

Death toll rises in Ukraine

$

The death toll from a military offensive in a flashpoint town in east Ukraine rose to at least 34, officials said yesterday, amid fresh warnings of civil war and the shutdown of a major airport in the region.
"Chaos and the risk of civil war" are now looming in Ukraine, said French President Francois Hollande, reflecting a frantic European push under way for a diplomatic solution before it is too late.
There are fears that Russian President Vladimir Putin could yet order an invasion into his ex-Soviet neighbour under the guise of a "peacekeeping" mission.
But the US general commanding NATO's military operations, Philip Breedlove, said Russian special forces the West believes are already deployed covertly "may be able to accomplish his (Putin's) objectives in eastern Ukraine" without the need to send in troops.
Kiev and its Western backers see Moscow's main aims as making sure Ukraine's east holds a planned "referendum" on Sunday calling for autonomy, and sabotaging all possibility of a nationwide presidential election two weeks later.
Slavyansk combat
With those deadlines ticking closer, Ukraine's authorities on Monday stepped up their offensive to crush rebels holed up in Slavyansk, a flashpoint town of more than 110 000 people that is the epicentre of the insurgency.
"Four of our fighters were killed and 20 were wounded" there in fierce fighting on Monday, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said on his official Facebook page.
"According to our estimates over 30 terrorists were killed and dozens were wounded," he said.
In a sign of how well-armed and trained the pro-Russian fighters are, on Monday they shot down a helicopter gunship near the town - their third since the assault on the town began last week.
An AFP reporter inside Slavyansk said fighting had not yet reached the centre of town, but basic foodstuffs and other items were running increasingly short. Locals hostile to Kiev's government have strewn tree trunks and tyres across the streets to slow any army advance.
Separately yesterday, all flights in and out of Donetsk - a regional industrial hub of more than one million people - were suspended, according to airport authorities, who gave no reason for the action.

'Nazi' propaganda

Russia, which belatedly owned up to deploying its military to Crimea ahead of that region's own hastily organised independence referendum, continues to deny its special forces are active in east Ukraine.
Instead it says the insurgency there is a spontaneous rejection of the Ukrainian government that came to power in February, after Kiev street protests forced out the pro-Kremlin president. And it accuses the Ukrainian authorities of "waging war on their own people".
Russian state media, seen in east Ukraine, constantly refer to the new administration as being run by "fascists" who embrace a Nazi-style ideology.
That propaganda has struck a nerve in the southern port city of Odessa, where dozens of pro-Russian activists died in a horrific fire last Friday started during clashes with pro-Ukrainian militants, some of whom were ultranationalist extremists.
It will also likely be a rallying cry on Friday, when Ukraine - like Russia - observes a holiday commemorating the Soviet victory over wartime Germany.
Putin, according to Russian reports, could make a triumphant visit to annexed Crimea on that day, after overseeing a parade of Russian military might on the Red Square in Moscow.

UN chief in war-torn South Sudan to push for peace

$

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon flew into South Sudan yesterday to demand an end to a brutal civil war, with leaders defying peace efforts despite dire warnings of genocide and famine.
The visit, coming as rebels and government forces battle for control of a key oil town, is the latest major push for a ceasefire in the nearly five-month-old civil war, which has seen the world's youngest nation collapse amid a brutal cycle of war crimes."The Secretary-General has repeatedly called on the leaders to find a political solution, and to put an immediate end to the violence which has led to the suffering of so many innocent civilians," a UN statement read.
Both sides in the conflict have been accused of widespread ethnic massacres, rape and recruitment of thousands of child soldiers.
Ban's visit comes days after US Secretary of State John Kerry flew into the capital, a visit in which he extracted promises from President Salva Kiir to meet face-to-face with rebel chief Riek Machar, a former vice-president.
But despite warnings of sanctions if fighting continued, the government has pushed forward a major offensive to claw back towns from the gunmen, capturing a rebel stronghold and forcing Machar to flee into the bush.
Kerry, who had already threatened US sanctions on the warring parties, has since warned of "serious implications" unless the fighting stops.
Ban, who is scheduled to meet with Kiir on his one-day visit, will also meet with community leaders from the tens of thousands sheltering inside hugely overcrowded fortified UN peacekeeper bases.
They are too frightened of attacks to leave the protection of the peacekeepers, even though the camps themselves have come under attack.

Peace promises broken

Ban last visited South Sudan amid euphoric celebrations at its independence from Sudan in July 2011, after it voted to split away following decades of war with Khartoum.

But as he arrived yesterday, battles raged around the dusty northern town of Bentiu, capital of the oil-producing Unity state, four days after government troops moved to wrest back control.
Defence Minister Kuol Manyang told AFP government troops were in control of the town centre, but that heavy fighting was ongoing in surrounding villages, some five kilometres from the town.
Rebels staged a large scale assault on Monday, but waves of gunmen "were repulsed after eight hours of fighting", Manyang said.
Forces include both mutinous troops as well as ragtag forces, including a fearsome militia called the White Army, after the ash they daub on their bodies, both to ward off mosquitoes and as war paint.
The war has claimed thousands - and possibly tens of thousands - of lives, with at least 1.2 million people forced to flee their homes.
A January ceasefire was never enforced. Stop-start peace talks in Ethiopia have yet to forge agreement on even the basic agenda.

Egypt's Sisi survives two assassination attempts

Abdel Fattah al Sisi, the former Egyptian army chief who deposed Islamist president Mohammed Morsi and is expected to win a presidential election this month, said there had been two attempts to kill him.
Sisi said in a joint interview with Egypt's privately-owned CBC and ONTV television channels there were "two attempts to assassinate me. I believe in fate, I am not afraid".
He did not say when the assassination attempts took place.
Sisi is expected to easily win the May 26-27 presidential election. The only other candidate is leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi, who came third in the 2012 election won by Morsi.
Since the army deposed Morsi last July, militants have killed several hundred members of the security forces in bombings and shootings. The interior minister survived an attempt on his life in September.
The army-backed authorities have outlawed Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, and thousands of its supporters have been arrested and hundreds killed.
A court sentenced the leader of the Brotherhood and hundreds of supporters to death last week. Secular dissidents have also been jailed, leaving little organised opposition.
Sisi has said his campaign would be unconventional - an apparent reference to concerns for his security. So far, there are no announced plans for him to appear in public.

Diver dies at S. Korea ferry disaster site

A diver died yesterday while working at the scene of South Korea's ferry disaster as investigators disclosed that the ship was routinely overloaded with cargo to make more money.
Lee Gwang-Wook, 53, suffered breathing difficulties after reaching a depth of 25 metres, said coastguard spokesman Ko Myung-Suk.
The 53-year-old, who was making his first dive at the scene, lost consciousness and was pronounced dead in hospital.
Lee lost contact with surface controllers after five minutes in the water. His air hose was found entangled with other lines, a coastguard official was quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency.
He was the first victim among scores of divers engaged in the grim and dangerous task of finding and retrieving bodies from the sunken ship, while fighting strong currents and low visibility in silty water.
Some 10 others have received treatment for exhaustion and decompression sickness since the operation began.
It has been 20 days since the 6,825-tonne Sewol capsized and sank with 476 people on board -- most of them schoolchildren - off the southwest coast.
The confirmed death toll stands at 263, while 39 people remain missing.
Yonhap, citing investigators, said Tuesday the ferry was overloaded on 139 out of its 241 voyages between the western port of Incheon and the southern resort island of Jeju since it began the service in March last year.
When disaster struck it was carrying 3,608 tonnes of cargo including 108 vehicles while the legal limit was 987 tonnes, the news agency quoted investigators as saying.
The ferry was carrying just 580 tonnes of ballast water - only 37% of the legal requirement - in order to carry more cargo. This made the ship dangerously unbalanced, Yonhap said, citing investigators.
President Park Geun-Hye yesterday issued a fresh apology for her government's failure to prevent the tragedy and renewed a pledge to eradicate "corruption and wrongdoing" blamed for the disaster.

"As the president who should protect the lives of the people, I don't know how to express my condolences to the bereaved families. I feel sorry and my heart is heavy with grief," she said.
"Greed for material gain prevailed over safety regulations and such irresponsible behaviour resulted in the loss of precious lives."
Park previously apologised for her government's failure to combat systemic and regulatory "evils" that may have contributed to the accident and vowed to sternly punish culprits.
The ferry sinking is one of South Korea's worst peacetime disasters, made all the more shocking by the loss of so many young lives.
Of those on board, 325 were students from the same high school in Ansan city just south of Seoul.
All 15 of the surviving crew including the captain who were responsible for sailing the ferry are in custody, facing charges including negligence and abandoning passengers.
Prosecutors also arrested three officials from the ferry operator - Chonghaejin Marine Co - last week on charges of loading the ferry well beyond its legal limit.
Investigators said on Monday that the crew had failed to alert passengers to the imminent danger for 40 minutes after sending distress signals. They became the first to leave the ship aboard a rescue boat, leaving hundreds of passengers trapped inside the sinking ship.

Civil society
Namibian civil society should become more visible, aggressive and dynamic and stop acting like an extension of government. Be proactive and take a strong stand in the fight against the destruction and devastation of our environment and coastal areas by greedy mining conglomerates and property developers in cahoots with the elites of this country, before it is too late! The GRN should never allow our land to be used for unqualified and unproven phosphate sea mining experimentation. Period!

Veterans’ cheques
Namibian government, are you only paying those veterans’ cheques to those who are alive? What about those who died in events like the Cassinga massacre? Imagine somebody losing three of her kids at Cassinga, yet she got nothing. And then people keep talking about veterans’ cheques. Who are those veterans? These parents deserve to get something.

Livestock war
The South African and Namibian livestock import war is a really serious matter, requiring highest level intervention by His Excellency President Pohamba and His Excellency Zuma. Literally speaking, South Africa’s conditions are too strict and cumbersome.

I read opinion piece by Dr Ngarikutuke Tjiriange and agree absolutely with him. The constitution is very clear, as it does not speak of which generation must qualify, but should your mother or father be a Namibian by birth, you should also be. This includes your children, grandchildren and so on.

SA music channel
MultiChoice, we need channel dedicated to 1980s old music like Brenda Fassie, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Paul Ndlovu, Soul Brothers etc. We need that South African music. Channel 323 mostly features American artists only.

NUNW
Did we salute and congratulate NUNW for the 10% increase? Government did an excellent job. NUNW, thank you for your hard work. I also call for your continued affiliation to Swapo.

Auntie Nangy

I can’t move on Dear Auntie Nangy I am a young woman who is married to the most handsome man, in my eyes. When we got married everything seemed okay but when l found out that my husband is cheating everything changed and now we are separated for almost two years. The biggest pain is that he is accusing me of dating two different men, but that’s not true! I can’t get married and cheat on the person that l have loved until now. What can l do? You have to decide what you want to do. Have you tried counselling to see if you two can try and make this marriage work? Do you really want to stay with a man that blames you for something you didn’t do and who also cheated on you? He cheats Dear Auntie Nangy I am 17 and I have a boyfriend that I love, but he cheats on me. What can I do? You either live with the cheating and share him with all his other girlfriends or move on. Not much else you can do. I love them both Dear Aunty Nangy I have this feeling. I fell in love with two girls from our neighbourhood and each day we meet, we talk and we laugh together. I don’t know what to start because they are now my friends. I really love the one more than the other. Please help me because I am dying from loving them after seeing them around. Good heavens, this is worse than reality TV. Make up your mind and ask the one you like most out on an official date and then take it from there. If the other one doesn’t want to be friends anymore, then just give it time. She might also be in love with you and might feel hurt. If she is a true friend, she should get over it in time. He broke my heart Dear Auntie Nangy I am 22 and I love my boyfriend, but he is trying to cheat on me! Now he broke my heart because I love him too much! What should I do? What do you mean he is “trying” to cheat? Did you catch him trying to do something behind your back? Did you confront him and what did he say? Communication is so important. Talk to him and decide if you two want to make this relationship work - without any attempts to cheat - or move on. It is as simple as that. Or do you have time for games?

Pair geared to light up Omuthiya

Former world champion Paulus “The Rock” Ambunda is feeling positive ahead of his fight against Cristian Palma from Chile, which is set to take place on May17 at Omuthiya. Ambunda, who narrowly lost against the current WBO bantamweight world champion Tomoki Kameda from Japan, has stepped up in weight and will be fighting for the WBA/IBF international super bantamweight titles. This will be Ambunda’s first fight since his unfortunate loss in Cebu, the Philippines last year. The Namibian is hungry to reclaim the dizzying heights of being world champion but he will have to get past a tough opponent in Palma who has a record of 27 fights, 19 wins, 7 losses and only 1 draw. “I know I am fighting a tough opponent, well rated in the world but my camp has done everything to prepare me for this occasion,” Ambunda said in a press statement released yesterday. “The WBA/IBF international titles are prestigious titles in the world and I will do everything in my power to make sure I keep this title in Namibia,” he added. His opponent from South America responded via email stating that he “will be there to spoil the party as I know I will win but I don’t know if I will win on points or knock him [Ambunda] out.” Knockout promise On the same card, Bethuel “Tyson” Ushona will be in action against highly rated Ghanaian boxer, Ebenazer Lamptey. This is set to be the Namibian’s biggest fight in his career thus far as he has done well over an extended period, which has seen him becoming the WBO’s welterweight no1. “I know that I’m rated number one in the world but l am focused and will knock him out in round six,” said a confident Ushona. Lamptey, for his part, reflected on the opportunity the bout is presenting him. “This is a good opportunity to get to the top as I know Ushona is number one in the world and if I win I will take over the mandatory challenge position. So there is no way I can let him survive this battle,” he said via email. The showdown is billed to take place at the Omuthiya Park in Omuthiya and will be promoted by Namibia’s premier promoter, the MTC Nestor Sunshine Boxing and Fitness Academy. Tickets are already on sale for N$50 per normal ticket and N$500 for VIP tickets and are available from Computicket (Shoprite Checkers and Woerman Brock outlets countrywide). “Due to the limited size of the venue, we encourage boxing fans to buy their tickets in advance to avoid disappointment,” said the academy’s Nestor Tobias. Two sets to love for Federer

$
0

The odds of the Federer twins winning a Wimbledon doubles title in the future have dramatically shortened after Roger Federer and his wife Mirka announced the birth of a second set of twins on Tuesday.
The Swiss tennis ace revealed the amazing news on his Twitter account just hours after he announced that he was pulling out of the Madrid Masters to be at the birth: “Mirka and I are so incredibly happy to share that Leo and Lenny were born this evening! #TwinsAgain#Miracle.”
The two boys were born almost five years after the arrival of their twin sisters Myla Rose and Charlene Riva in July 2009 triggered a flurry of good-natured jokes about future doubles champions.
Bookmakers even offered odds of 100-1 of the sisters emulating their famous father by teaming up to win at the All England Club but those odds paled into comparison with the chances of another set of twins.
Federer has been defying the odds on the tennis court all his life, winning a record 17 grand slam titles, and the announcement of twin boys sent social media into overdrive with all sorts of predictions about mixed doubles and a new generation of Swiss precision.
Former world number one Boris Becker tweeted: “Congrats to Mirka and @rogerfederer on the new addition to the #family ! #Leo and #Lenny will partner perfectly their older sisters in mixed”.
Bob Bryan, who has won 15 grand slam doubles titles with his twin brother Mike, responded: “Leo & Lenny! #thefuture #twinsrule.”
Federer is not the first famous sportsman to have twins – basketball legend Michael Jordan and Brazilian footballer Pele did as well- but two sets is a rarity.
Federer's older sister Diana also has twins and there had been some speculation earlier that his wife Mirka, a former pro tennis player herself, was expecting twins again but the couple managed to keep it a well-guarded secret.

Tony Parker poured in 33 points and the San Antonio Spurs romped to a 116-92 victory over Portland on Tuesday in game one of their NBA second-round playoff series.
French point guard Parker also had nine assists, and six Spurs players scored in double figures as the Western Conference top seeds took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
"The whole team is playing great right now," said Parker, adding that their game-seven rout of Dallas to advance from the first round on Sunday had buoyed the Spurs.
Kawhi Leonard scored 16 points and Tim Duncan scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the 152nd post-season double-double of his career, a tally that trails only the 157 playoff double-doubles of Magic Johnson.
Despite only two points from Manu Ginobili, San Antonio's reserves also came up big. Marco Belinelli of Italy scored 19 points and Australian imports Aron Baynes and Patty Mills had 10 points each.
The Spurs, showing the skills that produced a league-leading 62 regular-season victories, scored the first eight points against the less-experienced Trail Blazers and never looked back.
They led 29-16 after one quarter and 65-39 at halftime.
The Trail Blazers, meanwhile, missed six shots on their first six possessions and had two turnovers as the Spurs seized the initiative.
Portland connected on just five of 23 attempts from the field in the opening quarter, and Parker's first-quarter-total of 13 points almost matched Portland's 16.

Setting the tone

"They did what championships teams do," Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge said. "They set the tone early. They let us know how it's going to be."
Portland, who had upset Houston in the first round, never really threatened, and the Spurs rested their stars down the stretch.
Aldridge scored 32 points with 14 rebounds for Portland, while Damian Lillard, hero in the series decider against the Rockets, finished with 17 points on 6-of-15 shooting.
Overall, however, Portland's shooting percentage of 37.8 percent didn't let the make a dent, and they committed 20 turnovers to just nine assists for the game.
The Trail Blazers will try to regroup on Thursday, when the Spurs host game two, and Parker cautioned that the Spurs couldn't afford to be complacent.
"We have to realize game one is just game one," he said. "They will come out with a lot of energy, and we have to match that."
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was also leery of assuming San Antonio had set a tone for the series.
