We are one!

With African unity on the brink of extinction, it is commendable how far Namibia has come as a nation, as we celebrate 24 years of independence tomorrow.
We are a multicultural and multi-ethnic country. Even politically, we are a diverse country.
Because of this, there will always be perceptions - whether real or imagined - that one group or the other is enjoying dominance in some facets of our society.
But the fact that such perceptions have not degenerated into full-blown confrontations or social strife is enough evidence that Namibians are generally committed to jealously guarding our peace and tranquillity.
It is a sign of recognition that our future lies in celebrating diversity in unity.
We have a choice of either embracing unity or reaping the grave consequences of a divided nation.
On patriotism and love for this country, we shall not compromise. If ever our freedom as a nation is in danger, patriotism is the greatest common weapon we have to fight that which is threatening our existence.
Unity and patriotism are stronger than even the so-called weapons of mass destruction that Saddam Hussein was once accused of possessing in abundance.
Eternal vigilance and determination to protect what is rightfully ours, our right to exist, are the strength we need to forge our future.
It is not our differences that create disharmony. It is rather our unwillingness to accept, honour and celebrate them that put us on a collision course.
Namibians from all walks of life - blacks, whites, rich and poor - must preach the message of peace and unity. Not even the richest Namibian is more Namibian than the poorest citizen of this country, irrespective of their individual contribution to the Treasury’s coffers or if they are employed or not.
Whether you are from Khomas or Zambezi region, Vaalgras or Katjinakatji, you are a Namibian like any other. And your obligation to this nation is as big as that of President Hifikepunye Pohamba, our Head of State.
We can look back with pride on what we have achieved so far. Of course there are challenges ahead, but we will greet them together. They will also be overcome, as the weeks, months and years roll by.
We know this, because the same courage and determination that overcame our colonial and apartheid past still beats in our chests today.
Happy Independence Day to you, and may your dreams find wings in this free land.
