Lecturers at Namibia’s tertiary education institutions were yesterday warned against turning their students into sex slaves by demanding sex in exchange for academic marks.
The vice-president of the Students Representative Council (SRC) at University of Namibia’s (Unam) Hifikepunye Pohamba campus at Ongwediva, Tuhafeni Mwandingi, urged university staff to consider students as their own children.
He also urged students to consider their lecturers as their own parents.
Mwandingi was speaking at the joint commencement ceremony for the four Unam campuses in the North, held at Ongwediva yesterday.
The four Unam campuses are Ogongo, Oshakati, Hifikepunye Pohamba and the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, also at Ongwediva.
Mwandingi described university life as a sweet time of self-guidance, exploration, extensive friendships and a life filled with entertainment.
“But do not forget,” he said, “HIV/Aids is still a reality and alcohol and drug abuse still persists.”
Mwandingi further described teenage pregnancy as a leading factor responsible for academic failure.
Unam vice-chancellor Lazarus Hangula’s statement for the commencement of the academic year 2014 was delivered on his behalf by Dr Boniface Mutumba, pro-vice-chancellor for administration and finance, while Oshakati campus director Paulina Uugwanga directed the ceremony.
