Marriott to open 30 new hotels in SA

Marriott International will open 30 new hotels in South Africa by 2020 as it seeks to expand across the continent following its R2 billion buyout of Protea Hospitality, a senior official said yesterday.
The New York-listed hotel group is targeting the bulk of its additional growth in Nigeria, Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as it aims to triple revenue and rooms to 75 000 across Africa and the Middle East within six years.
The hotels under construction in Africa, which will have a total of 5 000 rooms, will require around US$1.5 billion (N$15.8 billion) of investment by its real estate partners, Marriott's Middle East and Africa head Alex Kyriakidis told the Reuters Africa Summit.
"We wanted to target countries where ... we would get maximum bang for our buck in terms of multiple hotel opportunities," Kyriakidis told Reuters in Cape Town.
Marriott, historically focused on Arabic-speaking North Africa, overtook competitors in Africa when it announced the acquisition of 166 hotels from unlisted South African chain Protea Hospitality in January.
Marriott is now the largest hotel operator in Africa with 125 hotels and 14 000 rooms in 10 countries.

Suspects
I wish to appeal to the Ministry of Justice and elsewhere within the legal fraternity. We have family members who are still in custody ever since their arrest as from 2005, yet until today they have been denied bail. Is this justice or personal deprivation to justice? Does the State think the way such cases are handled is fair? What about the suspects’ rights as citizens?

I am really disappointed in the justice system. How can they grant bail to a murder or rape suspect, or in other person accused of an inhumane act? However, when the person is accused of fraud as a first time offender, they deny bail.

Old toppies
Tatekulu Theo-Ben Gurirab you have enough wealth amassed for yourself and then you defend the building of the new parliament! I think you must do the honourable thing and tender your resignation now and vacate your post come 2015. There are more vibrant young people who can take over with ease to fully bring our country to the next level and not correct your mess. This also applies to Meme Loide, Tatekulu Nahas and the list just goes on and on. All you old toppies and mammies just make way for people of 30! Enjoy now your last days in peace, please.

Gospel
What happen to Omulunga annual gospel concert in 2012 and 2013? We need it this year. Wilhelemina wake up and do something this year. Thanks Governor Shaningwa that you brought it 2011. Please do it again. Governor Shaningwa, Governor Katrina Hanse-Imalwa and Minister Sara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and Tate Kaapanda, please help.

*Omulunga Radio, you are failing us as Namibian gospel singers. What is going on with Omulunga annual gospel concert? Please, we love you and we think everything is possible. Please let the gospel concert shine this year.

Aries
Your competitive and aggressive energies are stimulated and your temper is apt to be aroused as well. Patience, especially with family members, is in short supply. Remain calm.

Taurus
You feel energetic, confident, and assertive now, and are less inclined to be patient with the needs and demands of others. You may become angry if your ambitions are blocked.

Gemini
You feel a bit wild or impulsive and may act in an impulsive manner which could embarrass you later. Emotional outbursts are also possible, especially if are feeling stressed.

Cancer
Conversations with your partners and friends are critical now. This is a time for you to really listen and learn from others. You need other people’s ideas and opinions.

Leo
Errors in judgment, due to personal prejudices or emotion, are apt to occur. Your mood very much colours your thinking right now. You can, however, have fruitful discussions.

Virgo
This is an excellent time to eliminate whatever is unnecessary and worn in your life, from clutter and disorder in your environment to an unhealthy relationship or long-held belief.

Libra
Your sexual drive is quite strong, and you may be more concerned with satisfying your own desires than in being sensitive to your partner. All interactions are inclined to be tense.

Scorpio
You are capable of forceful, decisive action, and you have the will to carry through on your intentions at this time. Physically, you feel good and your energy is flowing smoothly.

Sagittarius
Flexibility, thinking on your feet, and the ability to accommodate the unexpected will be called for now. The pace is very quick. Try to remember what your priorities should be.

Capricorn
You will be pulled in many directions at once and will tend to scatter your forces, jumping from one thing to the next. You may come up with some fresh, original plan or insight.

Aquarius
You feel that you have to fight for what you want or believe in, and you are very clear, decisive, and convincing right now, but you also tend to stir up more controversy.

Pisces
This is a time for getting a little loose and wild with friends, going dancing, or doing something out of the ordinary that is stimulating and fun. An opportunity for a romance may arise.

I want to stop smoking

$
0

Dear Auntie Nangy
I have a big problem. I’m a smoker and I’ve been smoking for three years now. I want to quit, but is very hard. I’ve tried different things and even went to different churches for prayers, but I just can’t stop. Please help me auntie, what can I do?

Smoking tobacco is both a psychological habit and a physical addiction. The act of smoking is ingrained as a daily ritual and, at the same time, the nicotine from cigarettes provides a temporary, and addictive, high. Eliminating that regular fix of nicotine will cause your body to experience physical withdrawal symptoms and cravings. To successfully quit smoking, you’ll need to address both the habit and the addiction by changing your behaviour and dealing with nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Here’s how to start. Draw a line down the centre of a piece of paper and write the things you like about smoking on one side, and on the other side make a list of all the things you dislike, such as how it can interfere with your health, work and family. When the negative side outweighs the positive side, you are ready to quit. Then make another list of why quitting won’t be easy. Here’s the important part: next to each entry, list one or more options for overcoming that challenge. For instance, one item might be “smoking helps me deal with stress”. Your option might be “take five-minute walks instead”. The more you anticipate the challenges to quitting, and their solutions, the better your chance of success. Set a quit date and write a “quit date contract” that includes your signature and that of a supportive witness. Prepare a list of things to do when a craving hits, like taking a walk, washing the car, cleaning out a cupboard, taking a nap or practicing deep breathing. Make copies of the list and keep one with you at all times. Throw out anything that reminds you of smoking. Instead of a cigarette break at work, play a game of solitaire on your computer. Change your routine. Sit in a different chair at breakfast or take a different route to work. If you usually have a drink and cigarette after work, change that to a walk. If you relapse, just start again. You haven’t failed. Some people have to quit as many as eight times before they are successful. And last, put all the money you spend on cigarettes in a large glass jar and you will be amazed at how much you save, and what wonderful things you can do with that money.

Namibia nails surprise victory in Hong Kong

Namibia’s under-20 national rugby team yesterday upset the form book to defeat Canada 35-27 in their first match at the Junior World Rugby Trophy taking place in Hong Kong. The Namibians fell behind early in the game as Canada scored a converted try. But the ‘Young Welwitschias’ refused to lie down and came back strongly, the team’s manager, Gabriel Tjombe, telephonically told Namibian Sun from Hong Kong. “The team defended very well and lessened the score through a penalty by Christopher Arries,” he said. Canada, though, converted a penalty of their own with Arries then again tasked with reducing the deficit - something he succeeded in doing. Namibia then scored two quick tries, through JC Winkler and Wian Conradie, which were both converted by Arries. But the team’s hard work almost came undone on the stroke of halftime as they conceded another try, which was not converted, to leave the score at 20-15 going into the break. In the second half it took a while for either team to score but it was eventually Namibia who finally got on the score board after a try by centre Reinold Benade, which was again converted by Arries. Canada responded with a converted try, but Arries nailed another penalty for a 30-22 lead. Namibia was then reduced to 14 men after Ethan Beukes received a yellow card for a professional foul. This, though, only seemed to inspire the Namibians to push even more as they got another try – this time by Ascher Coetzee. Canada did manage an unconverted try towards the end, but by then the damage was already done. Tjombe described the victory as “morale boosting” especially since Namibia came into the match as total underdogs. “We are one of the smallest teams in terms of size and that may have led Canada to underestimate us,” he said. Namibia will next face Japan on Friday – a match that Tjombe admits might be even tougher for his players. “Japan narrowly lost to Uruguay and they might want to have a go at us. But we have motivated the boys and reminded them that they are all the same age, despite the size disadvantage,” he said. The result put Namibia on top of their group on five points as they collected a bonus point.

Open letter the GIPF board of trustees’ chairperson

Natjirikasorua Tjirera writes:

Dear Madam, I sit to write this letter with a heavy heart. This is because the most important person in my life, my mother, is being treated like a nobody by your staff and is being sent for pillar to post.
My mother retired in 2012 and has since that time been waiting for her pension. That means that for more than a year she had no income at all. Her claim was eventually submitted to the GIPF on the January 23 and upon inquiry she was told that her payment will be made within six weeks.
The six weeks came and gone and upon further enquiry no one could tell her when she could expect her payment. She told me about this after eight weeks and having spoken to a certain Annalisa and a certain Esme and a string of others who were not cordial enough to give their names. All she wanted to know was when she could expect to be paid. She had not received any income for more than a year and she needed an assurance, but all she got was being sent from pillar to post by people at your customer service centre.
She spoke to me about her ordeal and it pained me hearing her voice so sad because of money that is due to her, money that she contributed towards and money that she is rightfully entitled to. This prompted me to call your customer service centre to enquire on her behalf and I was met with the same response. I requested to talk to someone senior who may be in a position to assist and these requests were being turned down.
When I read your website I see the values you stand for and among others I read that you "strive to deliver the highest quality of service (right, fast and humane) to all our stakeholders in an innovative, professional and respectful manner", I was surprised by the quality of service this pensioner was receiving. We were left with no option but to seek the intervention of Honourable Muheua, the Deputy Minister of Labour to assist us to get to know when she will be paid. I have to pause here to express my gratitude to the Honourable Minister for taking time of his busy schedule to assist a member of his society.
After the ministerial intervention, your Elvis Nashilongo spoke to my mother and assured her that she will be paid on the April 4. It turned out that your Mr Nashilongo was being economical with the truth for reasons known only to him. My mother called me and told me about the non-payment and I called your offices to seek clarity as to when this payment will be made. Upon enquiry from my mother about what he promised her, your Mr Nashilongo had the audacity to raise his voice to a pensioner and intimidating her because I called your offices and they do not like that while they were busy helping her.
He gave her the impression that the GIPF was doing her a favour by processing her pension. To me that was clearly not respectful as per your values. Your staff has therefore not been honest, fair, transparent and trustworthy in everything they did, as you profess.
Madam, what hurts most is the fact that no one from your offices is willing to come up with the truth and no one seems to take responsibility. This person is not looking for a loan from the GIPF. She is not demanding things that are out of this world.
She only wants what is due to her after more than forty years of service. It hurts me to the extreme when I hear her sound sad only because your staff is treating her that way. It makes me wonder whether that is the treatment they give to their relatives or is it simply because she is not related to them.
Madam, I have to state that all that she wants to know is whether your institution will pay her or not and if so, when. I don’t think that is too much to ask.

Only 50 of the new Nissan Juke GT will be made available adding exclusivity to the appeal of the model’s many exciting visual upgrades.
Aimed squarely at the hip and trendy Generation Y, the funky Nissan Juke GT is an even more daring and youthful iteration of the ‘standard’ compact crossover which has captivated thousands of motorists across the world and increased Nissan’s reputation for offering bold, risk-taking vehicles and crossover innovation.
Nissan South Africa’s Crossover and Performance Vehicle Manager, Nancy Reddy, said: “We are excited to announce the release of the limited edition Nissan Juke GT, which joins the rest of the Juke range in South Africa. The Juke family has made waves since its launch with its quirkiness, sporty attitude and bold, unique design. The Nissan Juke GT showcases the extrovert ‘stand out’ attitude our customers seek, with enhanced trendiness, individuality and exclusivity.”
The Nissan Juke GT is based on the 140kW/ 240 Nm Juke1.6 Dig-T Tekna with leather and features a number of special personalisation upgrades to set it apart. These include sporty GT stripes in black or white, matching colour-coded mirror caps, GT badges and striking 17-inch ‘Hot Black’ alloy wheels, which are imported from Europe.
Existing high-level standard equipment includes automatic climate control, a multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, full audio integration with USB, aux and Bluetooth compatibility, keyless entry and starting, automatic lights and wipers. These join a host of safety equipment including ABS with EBD and BAS, six airbags and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with traction control.

#STANDOUT
Emphasising the Nissan Juke’s cool factor, the #STANDOUT online multimedia campaign, which launched in March, seeks to encourage the creative Generation-Y to ‘extend their GT stripes’ with the opportunity to win ‘red envelope’ experiences. These include a wide range of thrilling and exciting activities such as bungee jumping and river rafting - to the value of R1 000 each.
To enter, participants can submit creative #STANDOUT photo entries online via the Nissan South Africa Facebook page – from funky painted nails and quirky selfies to outrageous hairstyles and daring poses to ‘earn their stripes’. Fun and intriguing larger-than-life displays around key high-traffic areas in Johannesburg will also increase awareness of Juke GT at 24Central in Sandton and, until the end of April, at Melrose Arch and in Braamfontein.
Already making waves in the lives of the hip and trendy, South African Hip-Hop artist, Maggz, has earned his stripes and stands out - the Nissan Juke GT features in his new music video for No Tweets Allowed.
“Our company ethos - ‘Innovation that Excites’ - is perhaps best suited to the Nissan Juke, a daring vehicle which defies convention and creates a captivating motoring experience in every way. In GT form Juke has been ‘turned up to eleven’ and, with such limited availability, we expect heightened interest especially from those individuals who want their vehicles to reflect their outgoing personalities,” concludes Reddy.
The new, limited edition Nissan Juke GT retails for R298 200 including VAT and features the same three-year/100 000 km warranty and three-year/90 000 km service plan as existing Juke models.

Indonesians vote in parliamentary polls

$

Indonesians went to the polls yesterday in parliamentary elections expected to strengthen the main opposition and move its popular presidential candidate, Jakarta governor Joko Widodo, closer to becoming the country's next leader. Millions streamed to polling stations across the huge archipelago, which stretches across three time zones from remote and mountainous Papua in the east to the crowded main island of Java and to Sumatra in the west. "We hope for representatives who care about our interests rather than their own. I've picked the most honest and fair candidates," Ilyas Hasan, 43, told AFP in Jayapura, the capital of deeply poor Papua province. Some 186 million people are eligible to vote for around 230 000 candidates competing for about 20 000 seats in national and regional legislatures, although the most important is the vote for the lower house of the national parliament. Yesterday's polls also determine who can run in presidential elections in July and all eyes are on frontrunner Widodo and his main opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), which is tipped to win the biggest share of the vote. "I'm very confident my party will do very well," said the 52-year-old governor, smiling broadly after voting near his official residence in Jakarta, as he was mobbed by a scrum of about 200 journalists. One early exit poll, issued by CSIS-Cyrus, showed PDI-P with 19.36 percent of the popular vote, in first place but slightly lower than surveys had been predicting. A series of unofficial tallies, known as "quick counts", were due to be released later in the afternoon. They have accurately predicted the results in past elections. Official results will be released in early May. Known by his nickname "Jokowi", the governor is a fresh face in the world's third-biggest democracy, which has long been dominated by aloof former military figures and tycoons dating back to the three-decade rule of dictator Suharto. Political phenomenon The former furniture business owner has been a political phenomenon since his meteoric rise to the capital's top job in 2012. His common touch - he regularly visits Jakarta's slums in his trademark checked shirt - has won him a huge following. Buoyed by his popularity, the PDI-P has long been ahead in opinion polls for the legislative elections, and the party extended its lead after nominating him for president last month. Voters are expected to punish President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's ruling Democratic Party, with polls putting it in fourth place after a string of corruption scandals. It is currently the biggest party in parliament. The five Islamic parties which have fielded candidates in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country are heading for their worst ever showing, polls indicate, as people turn away from voting on purely religious grounds. Problems with voting in Papua, where officials said bad weather prevented planes transporting ballot boxes from reaching some mountainous districts, illustrated the huge logistical challenge of holding elections in an archipelago of more than 17 000 islands. However the elections appeared to have gone smoothly in most parts of the country, and polls closed at 13:00 without reports of other major disruptions to voting or violence. JAKARTA NAMPA/AFP

Performance boost for BMW 3 Series

$
0
0

BMW's M cars are intended for hard-car performance junkies, with lightning-fast responses and an uncomfortably hard ride on anything less smooth than a billiard table.
Which is as it should be - but there are also many enthusiastic BMW drivers who love the exclusivity and sporting persona conferred by the M skunk works but would prefer a modicum of real-world practicality to go with it.
That's why BMW invented M Performance Parts - a range of bolt-on goodies from the M parts bin to give your BMW as much - or as little - hard-core street credibility as you choose.
And now BMW SA has taken the concept a big step further with the limited-production 3 Series Sedan M Performance Edition. Just 500 are scheduled for assembly at the BMW plant in Rosslyn, just outside Pretoria, with a choice of 320i, 320d, 328i, 330d or 335i engines.

THIS IS WHAT YOU GET
Regardless of what's under the bonnet, each M Performance Edition comes with the M Sport Package, 19” M Sport rims and M Sport brakes - as well as an M Performance aero kit, side sills with foil, carbon-fibre rear spoiler and side-mirror housings, and a black M Performance grill.
All of which will cost you R50 000, over and above the sticker price of whichever engine variant your M Performance Edition is based on.
Yes, it's expensive, but it's about 40 percent less expensive than buying a vanilla-flavour Three and ordering the M Performance Edition parts separately - which would come to R87 000.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE
Another R15 000 will get you a special paint job, available only on the M Performance Edition, in metallic blue or (put your shades on before you look!) metallic orange.
Add another R2 895 for the top stripes (go on - you know you want to) and R43 900 for the special M Performance 20” double-spoke alloy rims.
An authoritative M Performance exhaust system (only available for the 328i and 335i) wil1 add another R11 795 to the bottom line, while an M Performance Power Kit (R15 670, for the 320d, 330d and 335i only) will boost power by 10-15kW and torque by about 30Nm.

THIS IS NOT AN M3
It's an exclusive, very sexy 3 Series street car with a dash of attitude that will also carry you and your family in comfort.

Dozens of 'hostages' walk free in crisis-hit Ukraine

$

0

Ukraine said yesterday that pro-Russian militants had released 56 "hostages" as US and EU leaders agreed to meet with Russia to seek a joint solution to the worst East-West crisis since the Cold War.
Hundreds of irate activists who want Ukraine's Russified eastern industrial heartland to break away from Kiev occupied a series of strategic buildings at the weekend and declared independence for the bustling region of Donetsk.
The raids drew instant Western charges that the Kremlin - its troops already massed along its neighbour's eastern border in response to its ouster of a Moscow-backed president - stood behind the raids and was plotting to dismember Ukraine further, after annexing its Crimea peninsula last month.
Ukraine's embattled leaders poured extra security forces into the flashpoint regions and regained control of the government seat in Kharkiv on Tuesday after a night of violence that included petrol bombs and stun grenades being hurled at police.
But the militants remain holed up behind barricades of razor wire and old tyres in the administration building in Donetsk and the headquarters of Ukraine's SBU security service in Lugansk -- site of the alleged hostage taking.
The SBU accused the Kalashnikov-wielding separatists of rigging the building with explosives and refusing to let 60 people already inside "leave the building and return home".
The charge sparked fears that Kiev's Western-backed leaders had run out of patience and were preparing to storm the occupied offices after labelling the separatists "terrorists".
But the SBU said yesterday that 56 people had walked free thanks to two rounds of negotiations led by unidentified lawmakers from Ukraine's parliament.
The agency did not specify how many people were still allegedly being held against their will.
"No one was injured," the SBU statement said.
"In order to minimise the risks to the lives and safety of citizens, the negotiations process is continuing."
Yet Ukraine's Interior Minister Arsen Avakov stressed yesterday that the "anti-terrorist operation" in cities along Russia's border remained in place.
"We have two options: political - in other words, negotiations - or the use of force," Avakov told a government meeting.

British culture minister quits over expenses spat

$

0

Maria Miller, the minister overseeing future regulation of Britain's press, has quit her cabinet post following a row over expenses, Downing Street announced yesterday.
"Maria Miller has resigned as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport," said a statement from Prime Minister David Cameron's office.
Miller had faced a week of pressure from the main opposition Labour Party, and from her Conservative colleagues, over payments she had claimed linked to a mortgage.
Cameron had given her his backing over the issue, but in her resignation letter to the prime minister, Miller said the matter had now become a "distraction".
"It has become clear to me that the present situation has become a distraction from the vital work this government is doing to turn our country around," Miller wrote.
Cameron replied that he was "sad" at her departure but accepted her decision.
Miller had last week made a terse 31-second apology to parliament for providing limited information to an inquiry into her claims.
An independent inquiry found she should pay back £45 000 (US$75 400, 54 600 euros), but that was cut to £5 800 by a committee of lawmakers.
More than 140 000 people had signed an online petition calling for Miller to resign or pay back the larger sum.
Two-thirds of Conservative Party members had believed she should stand down, according to a poll, because they feared the row was an unwanted distraction in the run-up to local and European elections next month.
Labour lawmaker John Mann, who made the original allegations against Miller which triggered the standards investigation, said: "About time too."
"Maria Miller should have resigned immediately and when she didn't resign, Mr Cameron should have shown a bit of leadership and sacked her," he told BBC radio.
A spokesman for the centre-left party said Miller had "finally done the right thing".
“By resigning, she has recognised that the public expect and deserve the highest standards from politicians," he said.
"Labour said all along that you cannot have one rule for a Cabinet minister and one rule for everybody else.
"That it came to this raises questions for David Cameron, whose judgment has been found wanting. Yet again he has shown himself to be out of touch and a prime minister who only stands up for one of his own."
As Conservative support for Miller ebbed away, Employment Minister Esther McVey - who is tipped as a possible replacement - on Tuesday broke ranks with her cabinet colleagues, saying she would have handled the apology differently.
Cameron must face a potentially fraught meeting of senior Conservative backbenchers on Wednesday, which will give critics an opportunity to voice their frustration over his handling of the issue.

She likes money Dear Auntie Nangy I dated a girl and she used to come visit me. The problem is she likes money too much. One day she asked me to send her money so she could pay her school fees and I did so. Not long after that her mother, who doesn’t even know me, sent me an SMS asking whether I had sent the money. After that the girl let me know she doesn’t want me anymore and even the mom told me to stop calling her daughter. What can I do? This girl has abused your trust. She has used you and hopefully you have learned a lesson but you have to forget about her and get on with your life. Don’t contact her and if she contacts you, just ignore her. Don’t even answer at all, because she is just after you to get as much money as she can. It is sad when girls play these kinds of games and you should learn that people must win your trust. Sex during pregnancy Dear Auntie Nangy I am four months pregnant and my boyfriend always asks me to have sex! Is it okay to have sex while I’m pregnant? Will it not affect my baby’s health? I’m afraid! Yes, you can have sex during any stage of pregnancy if you have a normal pregnancy – by that I mean that a doctor should have given you a clean bill of health. The most important part of sex during pregnancy is the ability for you and your partner to talk about it. Penetration, your orgasms or his semen cannot harm your baby, but emotional feelings like how you feel about your changing body and fluctuations in your sex drive can have an effect. Try to stay away from him giving you oral sex, as air blown into your vagina can cause an air bubble to form which can cause complications. Sex during menstruation Dear Auntie Nangy I am worried. My fiancé and I had unprotected sex while I had my period. Firstly I want to know if he can get sick from the dirty blood. My other question is whether I can fall pregnant even though I had my period. The whole idea of menstruation being something that women should be embarrassed about and that somehow it makes them dirty, must be changed in our society. Okay, enough of my little soapbox speech. To get back to your questions: No, your fiancé cannot get sick from having sex with you during your period and no, you cannot fall pregnant.

‘Pacquiao-Mayweather could still happen’

Trainer Freddie Roach says avenging losses to Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez are the top items on Manny Pacquiao’s to-do list, but believes the Filipino will one day face Floyd Mayweather. But Hall of Fame trainer Roach said Pacquiao’s legacy depends more on turning the tables on the two opponents who beat him in 2012 than on a belated, late-career tilt at Mayweather. “In the history books you have to avenge your losses, you have to avenge your losses in life,” Roach said last Wednesday at his Wild Card gym in Los Angeles, where Pacquiao’s media workout drew a throng. Pacquiao, the former world champion in eight weight divisions, will get his shot at retribution against Bradley in Las Vegas on April 12. Both fighters are calling it a chance for redemption, after Bradley beat Pacquiao by a controversial split decision in June 2012 -a bout that many observers thought Pacquiao had dominated. “We feel we got robbed in the last fight -now we need to be sure that we get the victory,” said Pacquiao, 35, who will be fighting to regain the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown he surrendered to Bradley. Six months after losing to the American, Pacquiao was knocked out in the sixth round by Mexico’s Marquez in the fourth bout between the two. If Pacquiao beats Bradley and Marquez beats American Mike Alvarado in May, a fifth Pacquiao-Marquez fight could be on the cards. “I’m not thinking about the next fight,” Pacquiao said. “I’m thinking about this fight.” Speculation However, Pacquiao can never escape speculation about a matchup with unbeaten Mayweather. In late 2009 and early 2010, Pacquiao and Mayweather were considered the world’s top pound-for-pound fighters and record profits were expected from a showdown. But a disagreement over pre-fight blood testing scuttled talks. Mayweather vowed never again to do business with Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum, but the subject never goes away. “I’ve thought about it so much, I’ve had dreams about that fight,” Roach said. While he added that it seems to be “getting further away instead of closer” Roach added that he thought it would happen simply because there are so few big-draw opponents for Mayweather and Pacquiao as they seek to extend their careers and cement their legacies. “The pool’s very small for both guys,” Roach said. “Somewhere they’re going to have to fight each other.” Roach thinks meeting Pacquiao has become more important for Mayweather. At 45-0 with 26 knockouts, the 37-year-old Mayweather is approaching the 46-0 career mark of retired Welsh star Joe Calzaghe and the iconic 49-0 mark of heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano. But Roach said that unbeaten record loses some gloss without a Pacquiao fight on it. “His record looks good, but if he’s so good, why didn’t he fight Pacquiao?” Roach asked. In the meantime, Pacquiao is calmly getting on with the business of preparing for Bradley, who has twice defended the title he won from Pacquiao and taken his record to 31-0 with 12 knockouts. In his only fight of 2013, Pacquiao defeated Brandon Rios to take his record to 55-5 with two draws and 38 knockouts.

LED technology saves power and costs

The Bonsmara Service Station in Windhoek’s Olympia area recently became the latest company to embrace environmentally friendly energy, investing approximately N$40 000 in replacing all its existing lights with LED alternatives.
The installation was performed by Lights & Energy Networking, a local company specialising in electricity savings.
According to Lights & Energy Networking owner Jochen Henke, the overhaul at Bonsmara Service Station represents a 2.6 Kw/h saving in energy consumption, and a further 2.57 kg reduction in carbon dioxide emissions produced per hour.
Having cost the filling station a total amount of N$39 960, Henke said the investment is expected to break even after 299 days, or 10 months, even at 24 hours a day running time.
“Lights & Energy Networking calculates the electricity savings of LED lights to the capital investment to see if the client breaks even within the warranty time of three years,” Henke said, explaining how the company assesses whether it is worthwhile to recommend a full LED conversion to a client.
The three-year guarantee on the product, he adds, means the client is guaranteed three years' worth of not having to spend a cent on light bulbs.

Local film distribution company to launch soon

Independence Ave Films, a film distribution company, will be launched in Windhoek on April 15 at the Warehouse Theatre.
Members of the film and arts industry are invited to be part of this historic event. The launch starts at 19:00 and entrance is free.
The company was established to address the lack of a movie distribution and film agencies in Namibia.
Independence Avenue Films is aimed at tackling the challenges faced by Namibian film products in terms of distribution and marketing.
“We furthermore want to focus on film-related events, as we believe in the need and possibility to establish a cinema culture in Namibia” the organisers said.
They explained that Independence Ave Films is an ongoing project.
“Independence was not gained in one day and should be a daily road we travel even today, in order to address social, political or economic challenges.”
“Art is part and parcel of this daily process to reflect and comment on social challenges. Art, and here in particular film, can play a role to reflect and bring society forward. Hence the name Independence Avenue Films,” they said.
To celebrate the launch, organisers will present the Namibian premiere of Jean-Pierre Bekolo’s honest and daring film The President and Najat Jellab’s short film The Projectionist.
The President takes a piercing, fictionalised look at current affairs. The film takes shape around activism, but without losing its light touch. It asks questions about the responsibility of those in power.
In The Projectionist, the lead character called Majid is almost indifferent to the world that surrounds him. He lives only for his job, as a projectionist, and his passion for films. But when he learns that the owner of the theatre, where he works, has decided to sell it, his whole life shatters in front of his eyes.
The film won Best Short Film Award at the Harlem International Film Festival last year and received a Special Mention at the 3rd Luxor African Film Festival last month.
