Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has reportedly flown out of the country for a medical operation in Singapore.
According to a Herald report, Mugabe was going for a routine cataract operation.
Mugabe’s spokesperson George Charamba said the president was going for a second operation, this time to his left eye.
"You do not do both operations once. He was done the right eye and now he is going for the second one. This was a date set well before last year which the president has to honour," Charamba was quoted as saying.
Mugabe’s health has been subject of much speculation, with rumours over the years suggesting that the veteran leader has prostate cancer.
Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe for more than three decades, turns 90 on Friday.
Charamba said the president would be back in the country at the weekend, “well in time for the 21st February Movement celebrations scheduled for Rudhaka Stadium in Marondera next Sunday”.
The 21st February Movement celebrates Mugabe’s birthday.
