Public tender recipients warned against tax fraud
The Department of Inland Revenue has urged companies awarded tenders for public works to correctly declare and pay their fair share of taxes to the State. The Department of Inland Revenue, which falls under the Ministry of Finance, last year embarked upon a tax compliance audit of all public contractors.
“The department’s preliminary findings are that in most cases, amounts received as payment for tenders, including tenders from State-owned enterprises, are either under-declared or omitted from the tax computations,” Commissioner of Inland Revenue Sam Shivute said in a media statement issued on Wednesday.
He warned that legal action would be taken against such offenders.
Shivute commended all those taxpayers who continue to fulfil their tax obligations as and when required by the law.
Sri Lankan president sends message to Pohamba
The special envoy of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa called on President Hifikepunye Pohamba at State House on Wednesday. Dilan Perera, who is also his country’s Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare, delivered a special message from his president. Sri Lanka, officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country in the northern Indian Ocean off the southern coast of the Indian sub-continent. Speaking to members of the media after their closed-door meeting, Perera said the message was received well.
“The discussions with and advice from the president [Pohamba] were very educative and very important for my country,” he said, without disclosing any details of the message. Perera said Pohamba’s blessings are very important to Sri Lanka, adding that he has hope that his country will soon overcome its international problems. Sri Lanka has been accused by the United States of America of war crimes during the island nation’s 2009 conflict.
