Politicians must develop other towns

The City of Windhoek has called upon politicians to help develop other towns so that people have other options besides flocking to Windhoek in search of greener pastures.
Municipality spokesman Joshua Amukugo said this week that national leaders must get involved in making smaller towns attractive for those looking for jobs.
Amukugo said the influx of people into the capital city has led to the proliferation of informal settlements and land invasion, particularly on the periphery of the urban areas.
“Most of these informal settlements have developed through the invasion of City-owned land which makes service delivery and planning by the City of Windhoek very difficult,” he said.
Amukugo said the City will not tolerate land grabbers and will continue to safeguard its land by removing any incomplete and abandoned structures.
He stressed that the City will continue to issue eviction orders to all persons occupying City land illegally, and will continue to protect its land by doing regular patrols.
Amukugo further stated that informal settlements compound challenges to the orderly development of land, while the delivery of health and commercial services is also in jeopardy in settlements in underdeveloped areas where there are no roads and other infrastructure.
He indicated that the City is especially concerned about illegal squatting in areas such as Goreangab; Otjomuise; and Okuryangava; as well as road reserves.
