Community eager for dam project to start
Keetmanshoop residents are all set for the start of construction on the Neckartal Dam project, which is expected to create many job opportunities and economically empower the region's inhabitants. The groundbreaking ceremony for the project is scheduled for tomorrow.
Community activist Ernst Jash, who has been vocal about the project since 2010 when he called on government to speed up the process and ensure that it provides jobs for the people of the //Karas Region, said that the community is thankful that the project will finally start.
"We, the community, thank government and specifically our governor Bernardus Swartbooi for the effort they put in to ensure that the project commences. All we want now is for our people to get the first opportunities when it comes to employment," he said.
Rabies vaccination concludes in Kavango
The Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) at Rundu says it has successfully concluded a vaccination campaign against rabies in the Kavango East Region. The vaccination campaign, which took place at the beginning of this month, was prompted by the deaths of two people of rabies in the region three months ago. The rabies cases were reported at Shambungu village, 160 kilometres east of Rundu. Rundu State veterinarian Dr Thompson Shuro said the campaign was a success, but statistics will only be available next week.
He said the campaign will move on to the Rundu district next week and from there to the Kavango West Region.
Car smugglers arrested
Three men were arrested on Monday after they tried to evade Customs and Excise procedures at the Trans-Kalahari border post by speeding through the border and refusing to stop.
The three were returning from Botswana in three different cars reportedly bought in that country.
They sped through the border post in the lane for cars leaving Namibia, and dodged oncoming traffic as they made their getaway.
Customs officials gave chase but could not catch up with them, and had to call on the assistance of the police at Gobabis, who reacted swiftly by setting up a roadblock where the three were stopped and arrested. All three cars - Toyota Corolla sedans - have been impounded and are currently parked at the Gobabis police station.
